Broadband ISPs have only just got over the shock of Netflix’s introduction of a new Super HD (Super High Definition) video stream to their unlimited movie streaming service and now they’re being warned to expect an Ultra HDTV (UHDTV) 4K stream (3840 x 2160 pixels) in the not too distant future.

In an effort to pull in more subscribers BT’s consumer division has today announced that its new BTSport TV service, which is usually offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages, will become available to EVERYONE with Freeview, BT TV, Sky TV (Sky Broadband) or Virgin Media TV for several weeks this month.

The next generation of video game consoles, such as Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4, are already set to give unlimited broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom a headache due to their new streaming services. But that’s only half the story and those wishing to download games will soon be gobbling in excess of 50GB (GigaBytes) per title.

Internet access provider PlusNet has revealed some interesting statistics about broadband bandwidth usage and online video gaming on its network. Apparently traffic for online gaming has risen by 50% in the last 12 months and that’s after a slight decrease was recorded between 2011 and 2012.

Netflix UK‘s unlimited movie and TV streaming service has been upgraded to support a higher bit rate Super HD (Super High Definition) video stream that applies less compression to the 1080p image, which means that those with faster connections should get a better quality.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today become the first UK Pay-TV provider to reach an agreement to offer the Netflix unlimited movie streaming service via its TiVo based broadband Video-on-Demand (VoD / IPTV) platform, which will begin this week with a pilot of the app in 40,000 homes.

Entertainment giant Sony (SCEE) has confirmed that its Gaikai video streaming technology, which will allow gamers to remotely play PS3 and PS4 (PlayStation) games by using their existing broadband connection (i.e. without first having to download anything), won’t arrive in the UK and Europe until later due to concerns over the quality of internet access.

The YouView (IPTV) broadband internet based video-on-demand and catch-up TV service, which is being bundled by a number of ISPs (e.g. BT and TalkTalk) in the United Kingdom and can also be purchased separately, has announced a major new £10 million advertising campaign to help promote its ease of use and advantages.

BT’s former Chief Technology Officer and a man whom has since become an outspoken critique of the operator, Dr Peter Cochrane, recently had another bash after he appeared on a special episode of the BBC’s Newsnight TV show to help examine the problematic issue of rural broadband coverage.

As expected BT’s consumer ISP division has today made its new BTSport TV service available to their customers, which among other things will be showing 38 live Barclays Premier League football and 69 live Aviva Premiership rugby matches. It’s also being offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages.

Netflix UK‘s unlimited movie and TV video streaming service has released its latest monthly Netflix ISP Speed Index update for June 2013, which is designed to reveal which ISPs deliver “the best streaming experience“. Suffice to say that not a lot has changed since earlier this year and Virgin Media remains top.

Some customers of the BT Vision TV (IPTV) service could this weekend lose access to the Sky Sports 1 and 2 TV channels unless they have a good standard broadband connection or take the operators superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service alongside their package.

The Tuesday night launch of Microsoft’s new XBox One console triggered a “big spike” in UK internet traffic as people tuned-in to the various live video streams and websites. Traffic on one of the Content Delivery Networks within TalkTalk’s infrastructure rose from 80Gbps (Gigabits per second) to 120Gbps and the same was true of other ISPs.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that UK broadcasters, such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, have the right to block retransmission of free-to-air TV (e.g. Freeview) programming over the Internet unless the related service (e.g. TVCatchup Ltd) gains specific permission. But they haven’t won yet.
