The Tuesday night launch of Microsoft’s new XBox One console triggered a “big spike” in UK internet traffic as people tuned-in to the various live video streams and websites. Traffic on one of the Content Delivery Networks within TalkTalk’s infrastructure rose from 80Gbps (Gigabits per second) to 120Gbps and the same was true of other ISPs.
TalkTalk also confirmed that data traffic on its network reached a new peak of 706Gbps (Gigabits per second) on the previous Tuesday (14th May), which occurred when Arsenal took on Wigan and Reading played Manchester City in the English Premier League (Football). The average traffic for a weekday is now around 640-650Gbps.

Meanwhile rival ISP PlusNet also reported a similar spike during Microsoft’s big event, which created quite a noticeable spike in their chart of video streaming traffic between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Suffice to say there was huge interest in the new device, which is incidentally likely to benefit from a superfast broadband connection when it launches towards the end of this year.
