Nexfibre Publish Reduced Q1 2025 UK Full Fibre Broadband Build Update

Nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), recently published their latest quarterly (Q1 2025) build update and confirmed that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network now covers 2.2 million UK premises. But a big chunk of their future build plan for 2025-26 has now vanished.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Virgin Media) has today announced, in a “railway first“, that 4G and hopefully 5G connectivity too (mobile broadband) has received a “major boost” after the London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Network Rail and the private sector completed deployment of a new custom-built Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

Liberty Global has confirmed that sibling nexfibre, which is working alongside UK ISP partner Virgin Media to deploy a new 10Gbps full fibre broadband (FTTP) network across over 5 million premises (c.2.2m have already been built), has scaled back its coverage target for 2025 to 2.5 million premises passed. At the same time, VMO2 “have paused our NetCo plans“.

The latest Q1 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have today been released, which saw their gigabit broadband network grow by 165,000 premises in the quarter to cover 18.4 million UK homes and related customers suffer a sharp fall to total 5,694,900 (down by -44k in Q1 vs +12k in Q4 2025) “due to heavy discounting in the market“. The operator’s outdoor 5G mobile cover also increased to 77%.

Royal Borough of Kingston in London to Get New 10km Full Fibre Network

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks, which is perhaps best known for helping to build a number of open access UK mobile and fibre networks, has been picked by Kingston Council (Kingston upon Thames) in London to build a new 10km long fibre (broadband, Ethernet etc.) network in the royal borough. Virgin Media’s business division will also be involved.

Virgin Media O2 UK Cuts Carbon Emissions by 56 Percent Since 2020

Broadband, mobile and TV giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today revealed that they’ve reduced carbon emissions by 56% against their 2020 baseline (up from 45% last year). At the same time, they also increased their fleet of Electric Vehicles (EV) to 350 (up from 281) – edging slowly toward their target to transition to a fully EV fleet by 2030 (c. 4,300 vehicles).
