Long-running Scottish civil engineering firm C-Plan Telecommunications, which has been helping to deploy gigabit broadband networks north of the border for a long list of clients (e.g. Openreach, Virgin Media, Vodafone, Gigaclear, and others), has fallen into administration after allegedly losing out on forecasted work.

UK ISP Virgin Media (O2) has become the latest broadband operator to join Lincolnshire County Council’s (LCC) interesting new Street Works Charter, which aims to help cut down on road traffic disruption by encouraging a more co-operative approach to street works between different companies (reducing unnecessary works).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ll invest the equivalent to approximately £700m this year into their ongoing Mobile Transformation Plan (MTP). This is aimed at enhancing network coverage and performance via new masts, small cells, 4G and 5G upgrades, additional spectrum deployment and increased automation via AI.

Last month we reported that broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) were gearing up to start making their new XGS-PON powered full fibre (FTTP) network upgrade available to homes in existing coax (cable) areas (here), which was expected to occur in March 2025. Since then we’ve observed a growing number of areas where the service and symmetric speeds of 2Gbps are now becoming available, albeit with a catch.

New customers looking to sign-up with broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) might like to know that the provider has just introduced some bigger discounts across their range of standalone broadband and bundle packages. For example, Virgin’s 1Gbps package is now just £36.99 per month on an 18-month minimum term (price increases to £40.49 from April 2026).

Network data from broadband ISP Virgin Media has revealed that Tuesday is the UK’s new “big night in“, with evening peak (between 8-10pm) internet traffic pushing higher than on any other day of the week – usually driven by online video gaming (mostly big update/patch downloads) and TV sports events (streaming).

A number of mobile operators, including O2 and EE, have already set out tentative plans for phasing-out existing 2G mobile services. But new data supplied by rural connectivity provider Wavemobile suggests that quite a few connections are still 2G-only, and thus closing the service will be more complex than the prior 3G switch-off.

Network operator nexfibre and supporting retail broadband ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), which share some of the same parentage, have today announced that they’ve expanded the reach of their symmetric 2Gbps speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to more than 6,000 homes in the Falconwood area of South East London for the first time.

Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL), which represents the four major UK mobile operators (EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK), has today confirmed that 10 more government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have just gone live in Scotland as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has come top in a new network benchmarking study of 4G and 5G (broadband and calls) performance across London, which was conducted by the Berlin-based NET CHECK organisation and saw them score the highest number of ranking points (932.83 out of a possible 1,000 points).

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today previewed a new study, which examined the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks from EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK across London. Sadly the results, which also tested 14 other major European cities, put the UK’s capital at the very bottom of the table.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) should now be coming back online after some of the provider’s customers suffered a partial outage of their internet connectivity this morning. This appears as if it could have stemmed from a peering/routing issue with some of their network partners (this may have also impacted other online services / providers).

Several credible sources have informed ISPreview that broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) is gearing up for an important new product launch, which is expected to occur in March 2025 (delays still possible). The expectation is that this will reflect the opening up of their new XGS-PON powered full fibre network in existing coax (cable) areas to live customers.

The CEO of Liberty Global, Mike Fries, has said they’ve made “significant progress” on their plan for opening up Virgin Media’s existing UK fixed line broadband network to wholesale (rival ISPs) via a new business (NetCo) during the first half of 2025 (here). Fries also confirmed they had received “proposals from a handful of the strongest infrastructure investors” for a stake in the biz.
