VMO2-Do-One-Thing

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media O2 has this morning announced that, since 2021, they’ve managed to remove 65 tonnes of single-use plastic from its operations and products. The move forms part of the company’s sustainability strategy (Better Connections Plan) and its goal of achieving zero waste operations and products by the end of 2025.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has told ISPreview that they’ve seen a 30% fall in the theft of their copper phone and broadband cables (Metal Theft) over the last year, which is being partly attributed to the deployment of a new “invisible” forensic liquid marker that can be sprayed directly onto cables and equipment.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of the same parents as Virgin Media UK (VMO2), has announced that they’ve expanded their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network to cover 2,000 premises in Loughborough – forming part of their plan to reach 22,000 premises in Leicestershire during 2024.

The recent launch of Virgin Media UK’s new 2Gbps full fibre (FTTP / XGS-PON) home broadband package was a welcome development (here). But one notable caveat was that it shipped with a new variant of the Hub 5 router, the Hub 5x, which lacked a functional Modem Mode, although this is planned to be introduced.

Ofcom has published their latest study of UK consumer complaints for Q4 2023, which once again names Virgin Media as the worst for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband, landline phone and pay TV services. Meanwhile, O2, which is part of the same company, attracted the most complaints for Pay Monthly Mobile services.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of the same parentage as Virgin Media (VMO2), has this morning announced that they’ve extended their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network to cover 1 million UK premises passed (Ready for Service), which is up from 830,000 in December 2023.

The wholesale division of Virgin Media O2 Business (VMO2), which supplies other UK broadband ISPs and network operators with connectivity services, has today informed their partners that they will not be raising prices for new business or existing services across all products throughout 2024.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has begun harnessing SpaceX’s global network of Starlink ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which are being used to help provide mobile backhaul (data) capacity to boost mobile services in some of the United Kingdom’s remotest locations (e.g. sites in the Scottish Highlands).

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has just deployed the first of 7 new masts in rural parts of Stirling (Scotland) to help boost local 4G (mobile broadband) coverage under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme. The first site, in the remote village of Killin, required a helicopter to deliver the new mast to its site.

The first government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades for England have today been completed in the market town of Keswick (Cumbria), which forms part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media). A further 82 masts in England are also set for upgrades.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today restarted their Digital Landline Switchover programme (i.e. migrating old analogue landline phones to IP-based services), which was paused at the end of 2023 as part of their commitment under a Government-led charter that is designed to limit risks for vulnerable users. But changes are afoot.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has picked broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2 Business) to be their strategic partner for providing mobility data, which is to be used to support the UK Government’s work at national and local levels, providing insights that reveal population dynamics, travel patterns, and other movement trends.

A new newspaper report has claimed that the ongoing work to withdraw BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR), which was due to complete by December 2025, could be facing a delay of up to two years. But the delay may only apply to vulnerable users who remain dependent upon old telecare devices, which often haven’t been updated to function with IP-based digital alternatives.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest 2024 ranking of home broadband providers, which found that smaller ISPs like CommunityFibre, Zen Internet and Hyperoptic topped the table and eclipsed the biggest providers that now mostly inhabit the bottom half of the table.
