Virgin Media O2 to Boost UK Fibre and 5G Rollout via Mast Sale

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media (VM O2) have reportedly started the process that could lead to them selling off all or part of their stake in the UK’s largest mobile tower network, which could fetch around £750m (half its stake). The funding would then be used to help fuel their full fibre (XGS-PON) and 5G mobile rollout.

A new study from economic consultancy firm Fideres has accused UK telecoms regulator Ofcom of “tacitly allowing” TalkTalk, Virgin Media (VMO2) and other voice-only landline providers (e.g. SSE) to overcharge consumers by up to £200 million since 2009 (£100m by TT, £50m by VMO2, and a further £50m by smaller providers).

Broadband and mobile giant O2 (VMO2) has today chosen Mavenir to supply its UK rollout of Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology. Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) are reporting a major UK network outage this morning (technically it’s been two outages), which has caused connectivity problems and appears to have disrupted their website and DNS servers too. Some reports indicate that their TV (IPTV), mobile and phone services have also been hit.

Consumers looking to change broadband providers in the UK will be unhappy to learn that the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed a delay to the introduction of their faster and more extensive One Touch Switch (OTS) migration system – possibly by 6 months or more – because ISPs are not yet ready to support it.

Consumer magazine Which? has published a partial summary of the results from their latest biannual 2023 survey of the best and worst broadband ISPs, which once again named Zen Internet as the best overall provider (customer satisfaction score of 81%), while TalkTalk were found to be the worst of the major players.

Ofcom has today announced that they may revoke the current mobile operator licences – held by EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (VMO2) – for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1900-1920 MHz), which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

Neos Networks Make Progress on Oxfordshire UK Full Fibre Build
