The CEO of Vodafone, Nick Read, has reportedly said they are considering becoming an investment partner for BT Group’s £15bn rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology (here), which is currently aiming – via Openreach – to cover 25 million UK premises by December 2026.

After a bit of a delay, CityFibre has confirmed that their local civil engineering partner, MAP Group (UK), has finally started work to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the large North Yorkshire (England) town of Middlesbrough – costing £42m.

The latest first quarter 2021 results (financial Q4 FY21) from ISP and mobile giant Vodafone UK have today been published, which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +35,000 customers (vs +38k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 911,000. But their mobile base fell to 17,253,000.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today launched a new range of “flexible mobile plans” for small and medium sized businesses (10 – 150 employees) called ‘Business Evolve’, which gives firms more choice over data and calling allowances, as well as devices (handsets etc.), lines and contract terms etc.

Ofcom has today set out the terms of reference for their future UK mobile strategy review, which will examine how the regulator can adjust their approach in order to improve 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) network connectivity for consumers and businesses over the next 5 to 10 years.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today confirmed that they’re relaunching their one year (12 months) free Superfast Broadband Packages offer for small businesses, which applies to those who take out one of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and 36-month term based services.

Ofcom has published their 2021 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while Three UK did the same for mobile (86%). Generally, customer service has taken a COVID-19 hit.

A new study from consumer magazine Which? has warned that millions of UK consumers may be “at risk of being hacked in their homes” because the “outdated” broadband router they use, as supplied by several major ISPs including EE, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Vodafone, could contain potential security flaws.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2020 consumer complaints report has today been published, which names and shames Vodafone for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband and phone in the quarter, while iD Mobile and Three UK jointly did the same for Mobile and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 344,243 tweets that were aimed at UK mobile operators, claims to have identified those that had the most stressed customers. Apparently, customers of iD Mobile are the most frustrated.

CityFibre has today committed an additional £12.5 million to help boost their ongoing deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the West Midlands city of Coventry, which will see them reach “tens of thousands more homes and businesses” across the location.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the final results from their recent £1.38bn auction of 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz frequency bands, which includes a few key changes from last month’s principal stage. Mobile operator Vodafone UK has opened a new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) focused Test and Integration Lab at its Newbury technology campus, which will help to support their future plans for a commercial rollout of the 4G and 5G mobile supporting technology in rural parts of England and Wales.

The Government has today begun a consultation on their proposed changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure, which seeks to extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England via key changes (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres and softening planning permission).

CityFibre has announced that their £40m roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the Buckinghamshire town of Milton Keynes, which was substantially completed at the end of last year (i.e. they still had a bit left to do), is to be expanded to reach an additional 7,000 homes.
