Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has criticised Ofcom’s recent proposal to defragment the 5G ultrafast mobile broadband friendly 3.4-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands after next year’s auction, which they complain favours Three UK (H3G) by allowing them to establish a “kingmaker” position from where they can obstruct rivals.

A new Which? study has found that in 524 out of 650 UK parliamentary constituencies 4G mobile coverage is not available via all four operators to the whole constituency. The most poorly-served city-based constituencies (all under 80% coverage) were Rochford, Southend, South West Devon, Romsey and Southampton North.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre has today announced that their £30m plan to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to “nearly every home and business” in the town of Southend-on-Sea (Essex) – supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone – has finally begun the construction phase.

New and existing customers planning to join Vodafone’s fixed line FTTC superfast broadband and phone packages may like to know that the ISP has dropped their monthly prices in a new special offer, which sees their 35Mbps plan fall to just £19.99 per month and 63Mbps at £22.99 (we think that’s the cheapest UK offer for such a plan).

Mobile giant and UK ISP Vodafone has published their latest quarterly results to the end of June (Q1 FY20) and launched 5G roaming in 55 towns and cities across four countries (Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK). On top of that they added +31K fixed broadband customers to total 606,000 (down from +50K added in the previous quarter).

Mobile operators O2 and Vodafone have today finalised a deal that will extend their existing joint 50:50 network sharing agreement to include 5G mobile active equipment, such as radio antennas, on shared network sites across the UK. But earlier proposals to deliver a “shared, future proof fibre” network have not materialised.

A new report from Ofcom has revealed that Plusnet attracted the most UK consumer complaints for fixed line broadband and phone in Q1 2019, while Vodafone attracted the most gripes for Mobile and TalkTalk for Pay TV services. On the flip side Sky Broadband (Sky TV) and EE generated the fewest fixed line moans.

The UK communications and media (broadband, mobile, TV etc.) regulator has today set out a range of new measures that are intended to tackle bundles of both mobile handsets and tariffs (airtime contracts) together, which often continue to charge consumers for the handset even once the minimum contract term has ended.

Cityfibre has today confirmed the next 14 UK cities and towns (only three are new additions) to benefit from Phase Two their £2.5bn rollout of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network, which is being supported by residential ISP partner Vodafone and aims to cover 5 million premises by 2025.

Cityfibre’s £30m project to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to homes and businesses across the Cambridgeshire city of Peterborough has been given a boost with the appointment of a second civil engineering contractor, locally based firm Telcabo.

Vodafone has announced that their new 5G network, which promises average mobile broadband speeds of 150-200Mbps and peaks up to 1Gbps, has now started rolling out into Birkenhead, Bolton, Gatwick, Lancaster, Newbury, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Wolverhampton after initially only going live in a few major cities.

Telecoms operator Vodafone appears to have reduced their 30 Day Service Guarantee to just 14 days, which means that new subscribers to their mobile and broadband services will have less time to consider cancelling their contract without penalty if they’re not totally satisfied.

New customers looking to take one of Vodafone’s fixed line FTTC based superfast broadband and phone packages are, until 13th August 2019, also being offered an included Amazon Echo Plus smart speaker (retails at up to £139.99). On top of that the ISP has also slightly reduced their monthly price on the 35Mbps plan.

Cityfibre’s £35m investment to upgrade and extend their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the south coast UK city of Bournemouth (Dorset), which is being supported by ISP partner Vodafone UK, appears to be moving up a gear this month with work starting in areas north of Wallisdown Road.

Crowd-sourced analyst firm OpenSignal has today published the first results from their initial real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 8 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service). The highest maximum speeds were seen by 5G users in the USA (1815Mbps), while the UK scored the lowest (569Mbps).

Cityfibre has announced that their £60m rollout of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the West Midlands city of Coventry, which is supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone, has moved into several new areas of the city (Bablake, Radford and Henley) and added a new contractor.

Once again contractors working for Cityfibre, which is investing £30m to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the city of Peterborough, have attracted local complaints. A lack of prior notification, blocked driveways / roads, rubble left on lawns and issues of work quality seem to top the gripes.
