Ofcom’s Spring 2023 report into UK fixed line broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 48% of the UK (up from 42% in Sept 2022), while 73% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 70%) and 73-82% of premises can get outdoor 5G cover from at least one operator (up from 67-78%).

Broadband ISP Ogi has today announced that their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network is to be extended across more of Bridgend county, which will form part of their £200m Infracapital-backed project to cover 150,000 premises in rural parts of South Wales by 2025.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today confirmed that they’ve so far deployed “reliable” 4G based mobile broadband coverage across a total of 50 rural sites in the United Kingdom, which forms part of their commitment under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with the Government.

Alternative network provider Country Connect, which since 2021 has been building a new gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in South Wales (here), has confirmed that their relatively small and rural-focused network now covers 3,709 premises (up from 2,750 in April 2022).

The Welsh Government has put out a Prior Information Notice (PIN) on a future project for “Extending High Speed Broadband Reach in Wales“, which indicates that they’re preparing to procure a contract worth around £70m (state aid) to upgrade broadband for 84,000 premises (i.e. those that can’t yet get “superfast” speeds of 30Mbps+).

UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (April 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 7,000 premises (up from 5,900 in Oct 2022), with 800 further builds in progress (down from 2,000).

Infracapital-backed broadband provider Ogi, which is investing £200m to build a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 150,000 premises in rural parts of South Wales by 2025, has today added the communities of Tonyrefail and Tonypandy to their existing build plan in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

The Powys County Council in mid-Wales has expressed “concerns” about a change to the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband subsidy programme, which they fear could result in hard-to-reach households and businesses in the county being “negatively impacted“.

The Welsh Government (WG) has published a Q4 2022 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which reveals that a total of 35,770 extra premises (up from 34,122 in Q3) have now gained access to their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that their ongoing broadband ISP pilot of faster Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) download speeds – 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream) – has been extended to run for several more months and is also being expanded into more exchanges.
