Last year we reported that the Kent Police had arrested four people in connection with the theft of batteries from “telecoms boxes” (i.e. street cabinets used by broadband providers), cables and other equipment (here), which caused some areas to lose internet connectivity. Two people have now been charged with 40 offences – Levi Backett (38) and a 15-year-old boy.

The Court of Appeal in London has dismissed an attempt by investment firm LetterOne (L1), which had been seeking compensation after the previous Government used the new National Security and Investment Act 2021 (NSIA) to force them into selling Upp’s full fibre broadband network to rival operator nexfibre at a loss (retail customers went to Virgin Media).

Customers connected to UK ISP Youfibre (and other ISPs) on one of the country’s largest alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks, Netomnia (Substantial Group), are currently understood to be experiencing “intermittent connectivity or slower-than-usual performance” due to an ongoing Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

Alternative broadband ISP Brsk, which last year merged with Netomnia’s growing multi-gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (here), has reportedly been hit by a major data breach that is claimed to have resulted in 230,105 customer records being exposed to hackers. The database has since been put up for sale.

The ITS Technology Group, which have deployed various open access full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across the UK, has today announced that they’ve partnered with bandwidth infrastructure company euNetworks to provide enterprises with direct connectivity to Europe’s “most strategically important” data centres.

The NordVPN service, which is a familiar Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider, has today announced that they’ve expanded the availability of their Call Protection feature (formerly known as scam call protection) – initially only available across the USA – to also cover Android users in the United Kingdom and Canada. Support for iPhone users is coming soon.

A new YouGov survey of 5,209 participants from the UK, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Italy, which was conducted during August 2025 and commissioned by FRITZ! (somewhat of a vested interest), claims to have found that users regard European brands of broadband router as the “most trustworthy“.

The UK government will today introduce their new Cyber Security and Resilience Bill (CSRB) to parliament, which aims to toughen existing defences against cyberattacks – particularly those that impact the health, energy, water and transport networks – and imposes new requirements on broadband, mobile, managed service providers, data centres and even their suppliers.

Internet, TV and phone provider Virgin Media (O2) and security partner F-Secure have today announced that they’ve now begun offering customers of their optional (paid) ‘Advanced Security’ add-on service an additional “Identity Protection” feature, which is designed to help prevent identity theft.

The UK telecoms and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has revealed they’re using an unidentified third-party monitoring tool – seemingly with AI capabilities – to track the public’s use of Virtual Private Network (VPN) tools as part of Government concerns that they’re being used to circumvent internet censorship measures under the Online Safety Act (OSA).

The UK communications, internet and media regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that they’ve agreed to work “more closely” with their counterparts in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The move aims to “strengthen the security and resilience of telecoms networks” and tackle consumer-facing risks from scams and fraud.

A new landmark Telecommunications Charter has today been agreed between several of the UK’s leading broadband, mobile and phone providers, which commits BT (EE), Virgin Media (O2), VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, TalkTalk, Sky (Sky Broadband) and the Comms Council UK to a “crack down on scam calls and fraud“. A sub-charter also exists for B2B phone services.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened a new compliance programme to assess whether regulated UK phone providers are meeting their obligations concerning the need to ensure access to emergency calls (e.g. 999 and 112). The move comes after a string of broadband and VoIP providers, including BT, Gigaclear and Vonage, were fined over various related failings (here, here and here).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that over 1 billion scam text messages have been blocked by their network and prevented from reaching customers. The provider is now calling on the government to ensure that their forthcoming Fraud Strategy helps to tackle this by empowering law enforcement with the tools and resources needed to crackdown on the problem.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has announced that they’ve partnered with cloud-based cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike to launch a new AI-powered antivirus service for their small business customers – Business Antivirus Detect and Respond (BADR), which is designed to “proactively stop threats before they become breaches” (every AV solutions could be described this way).
