A small group of homes in the East Dorset (England) town of Ferndown have effectively been denied access to a new gigabit broadband network because a local housing association, which owns a crucial piece of land, are only willing to grant Virgin Media’s (nexfibre) engineers a wayleave (legal access agreement) for an individual property; not the wider area.

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has today confirmed that they’ve introduced a “price lock” on their monthly rolling full fibre broadband plans, which means that new and existing customers of the fixed like service “can rest assured that there won’t be any price hikes for their monthly rolling plan in 2026“.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) has this morning confirmed that all new and existing Virgin TV 360 and Stream box customers with the ‘Sky Entertainment‘ channels (Sky Comedy, Sky Witness, and the soon to be relaunched Sky One) will soon also be able to access popular Sky Atlantic programming on channel 111, “at no extra cost“.

Over the past few months we’ve noted how quite a few existing customers of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (O2) home broadband packages are, at the end of their first contract term, now being offered significant automatic extensions to their existing discounted service price – often lasting for another 12-months.

Market regulator Ofcom has this morning published their latest quarterly Q3 2025 study of UK consumer telecoms and TV complaints, which jointly names EE, TalkTalk and Vodafone as attracting the most moans from customers for fixed broadband services, while Sky Mobile took the most flak for Mobile services and EE did the same for Pay TV.

Alternative network operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has deployed their own full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to cover 3 million UK premises RFS (inc. 460,000 customers), have today confirmed that they’ve been acquired by the owners of Virgin Media (O2) and nexfibre (i.e. InfraVia, Liberty Global and Telefónica) for £2bn. But rival bidder CityFibre may yet raise a competition complaint.

France-based internet connection benchmarking firm nPerf has this morning published the results from their annual 2026 crowdsourced study into fixed broadband ISP speeds across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The results cover Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Fibrus (NI) and Ogi (Wales).

The latest Q4 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have just been published and reveal that their gigabit broadband network increased its UK coverage by 115,100 premises in the quarter (down from 139k in Q3), while related customers fell to total 5,687,600 (down by -16.7k in Q4 vs +60.8k in Q3). But their mobile base grew and 5G outdoor population coverage hit 87%.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has criticised a comical TV advert for Virgin Media’s (O2) UK broadband service, which featured a Walrus driving a speedboat, after rival ISP BT complained that the promotion included a claim that could not be verified of the provider being “Awarded Best Broadband Experience”. But one other BT complaint was rejected.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today approved a request by the parent of mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) to vary its spectrum licence to allow for the launch of their imminent O2 Satellite service, which will harness Starlink’s satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to connect with standard smartphones in the UK.

In a small but welcome development. Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has announced that both new and existing customers of their home broadband products – powered by nexfibre’s UK full fibre network (covers 2.5 million premises) – will benefit from a change of standard price on their 200Mbps tier that reduces it by -£1 to £29 per month.

Mobile infrastructure company Cornerstone (CTIL), which was originally established as part of a UK network sharing agreement between O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone (Vantage Towers), has today announced a new strategic partnership with StonesThro to deploy a nationally distributed Micro-Edge cloud infrastructure via their estate of c.16,000 mast / cell sites.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has today opened a call for evidence to support their new ‘Mobile Market Review‘, which aims to ensure that their policy and regulatory frameworks are updated to support investment, innovation, competition and consumers. The review could help to boost the rollout of fast 5G and future 6G mobile broadband networks.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) and network technology provider Ontix have this morning reported that they’ve successfully deployed their first 4G and 5G Small Cells in North Wales, which have apparently gone live across Flintshire to boost data capacity (mobile broadband), including around Deeside Industrial Park.

O2’s (Virgin Media) joint deployment with IONX Networks (formerly Dense Air), which last year claimed to have become one of the first mobile operators in the UK to successfully integrate a neutral host Small Cell into their live 5G Standalone (SA) core network (here), has been cast into doubt after IONX fell into administration at the end of last year.

Comparison site Uswitch.com has named the winners of their annual 2026 Telecoms Awards, which among things saw EE scooping the win for best “National Broadband Provider of the Year“, while YouFibre won the best regional provider award for the second year in a row and VOXI scooped the win for best mobile “Network of the Year“ etc.
