NordVPN, which is a popular Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider, has announced that they’re upgrading more of their infrastructure to adopt 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable servers in order to boost speeds. London, Singapore, and a part of the US are planned to go live by the end of this year.
Many VPNs currently run on 1Gbps servers, but as demands rise (e.g. more consumers adopting FTTP and 5G networks) then these will increasingly run into bottlenecks (congestion). The move to 10Gbps should help to mitigate that change.
At present the VPN provider said that more than 20% of their servers have been upgraded to 10Gbps, which started with Amsterdam and Tokyo some time ago. The next to benefit by the end of 2020 will be London, Singapore, and a part of the US.
Marijus Briedis, CTO at NordVPN, said:
“The number of people relying on NordVPN for secure internet access is skyrocketing. We’re going to keep improving our server speeds to meet that demand by acquiring future-focused solutions like 10Gbps servers
What’s not so clear is how long it will take to move all of their servers to 10Gbps.
UPDATE 22nd Dec 2020
We did ask NordVPN about their plan to cover all locations, which they said “would not be possible technically at the moment.” However, as far as the biggest server locations go, they’re currently “planning to upgrade our servers there by the end of 2022.”
Why 10G? 25G is the way forward and costs no more, could have future proofed with a little more thought
Because 25G is not the same price would be the answer. I wiuld hazard there is a careful balance between NIC speed, CPU requirements in the servers driven by that NIC speed and port cost. I would imagine that 10G works out a lot cheaper than 25G.
25G costs no more? SFP+ is the same price as SFP28?
Surprised they had any servers with 1G ports now anyway let alone 80% of them.
And devices with those 25 gbs portss cost the same as only10gbs? What the hell are you talking about, 10gbs is way older standard, there is more gear around, in meantime we had 40gbs before 100gbs/25gbs was more common. That’s like asking why multigig (2,5gbs/5gbs) is more costly while multigig came after 10gbs as stopgap…
@SFP – Transit cost is far greater if you’re going from a 10G commit to 25G, it’s not as simple as just the transceiver. 10G Cogent bandwidth can set you back $2000/m lets say, 25G will be at least $3500.
Maybe now my 350mbit cable won’t turn into 40mbit then, even when using UK NordVPN servers. Terrible company
Heres a random thought…contact them!
I was getting crap speeds on virgin media and contacted them…some support later and it was using about 95% of my available bandwidth.
Cracking company. Great support and the speeds are awesome.
Also, NordVpn servers are located in datacenters. Those places are not property of nordvpn : they rent places in dc. Usually dc prices are function of ethernet port speed and yes, 10G is way more costly as 1G 🙂
Isn’t this the same company that tried to cover up a customer data leak?
