Internet and phone provider TalkTalk UK has warned that up to 390 jobs could be cut as it moves to close a customer service/sales call centre in Northampton, while also restructuring another two in Preston and Warrington; but crucially some 450 new jobs will be created elsewhere.
According to TalkTalk, the proposed move should help to “simplify” how the ISP operates. The provider further claims to be receiving fewer calls to its customer service lines and increased levels of positive feedback, though Ofcom noted last month that TalkTalk received an average of 0.61 complaints per 1000 customers during its most recent data collection period, which is up from 0.55 in Q3-2011 and 0.58 in Q2-2011 (here).
TalkTalk Statement
“There will be significant new opportunities for existing employees at Preston, Stornoway and Warrington and TalkTalk will be working with affected employees to maximise opportunities to transfer to new roles and thereby minimise job losses in a year that, ultimately, will see more UK roles created than lost.
It is proposed the Northampton site will close after the restructuring is complete with approximately 200 new roles created at Preston through the appointment of a new strategic partner to manage the existing site and some of its operations.”
Indeed, aside from the creation of 200 new positions in Preston, TalkTalk also intends to open up a further 250 new engineering jobs in order to support the forthcoming launch of its YouView based TalkTalkTV (IPTV) service this summer.
