Mobile operators EE and Three UK have once again come top of a new RootMetrics study into Mobile Broadband performance across the three cities of Birmingham, Nottingham and Coventry in England.
As before, it’s not an entirely fair fight since EE are currently the only mobile network operator with a live 4G (cell) network; the rest have yet to begin the national deployments of their own competing services. In the meantime Vodafone, O2 and Three UK are only able to compete on their existing 3G based networks.

Overall RootMetrics conducted between 24,000 and 27,000 “mobile performance tests” in each of the three cities, which revealed that all of the four major mobile operators were able to produce a Network Reliability score of more than 90 out of 100 (Three UK, EE and O2 tended to come closer to 100, while Vodafone was often a few points off the pack).
But in terms of raw service speed the winner tended to be EE by quite a fair margin (thanks to 4G), while Three UK similarly pulled ahead of the other 3G operators.
Birmingham – Best Operator for Mobile Internet Speeds
1. EE (DL: 16.2Mbps | UL: 10.5Mbps)
2. Three UK (DL: 6.3Mbps | UL: 1.8Mbps)
3. Vodafone (DL: 5.1Mbps | UL: 1.7Mbps)
4. O2 (DL: 4.1Mbps | UL: 1.6Mbps)Nottingham – Best Operator for Mobile Internet Speeds
1. EE (DL: 13.7Mbps | UL: 10.5Mbps)
2. Three UK (DL: 6.8Mbps | UL: 1.9Mbps)
3. O2 (DL: 3.9Mbps | UL: 1.6Mbps)
4. Vodafone (DL: 2.4Mbps | UL: 1.2Mbps)Coventry – Best Operator for Mobile Internet Speeds
1. EE (DL: 13.2Mbps | UL: 6.8Mbps)
2. Three UK (DL: 6.7Mbps | UL: 1.8Mbps)
3. Vodafone (DL: 3.9Mbps | UL: 1.3Mbps)
4. O2 (DL: 3.8Mbps | UL: 1.5Mbps)
The study also revealed that people in Birmingham currently have access to one of the fastest mobile internet networks in the UK (i.e. out of those tested by RootMetrics). Similarly each operator was generally able to deliver high quality text and voice calling services. The full report can be found on RootMetrics website.
