Vodafone UK Makes Big Changes to Pay As You Go 1 Tariff

Tuesday, Dec 8th, 2020 (2:08 pm) - Score 33,984
vodafone uk sim holder

Mobile operator Vodafone UK are set to make a bunch of big changes to their ‘Pay As You Go 1’ tariff from 12th January 2021, which depending upon how you use the service could result in significantly higher charges being applied to customers. The cost of some non-standard calls will also be hiked.

We should point out that those who instead take one of Vodafone’s other Big Value Bundle PAYG tariffs will not be impacted by the following changes, unless their bundle expires and they don’t renew, or if you opt-out of your bundle early. Otherwise, this only impacts those who merely use Vodafone’s popular PAYG1 tariff.

The operator is also changing the amount of time a SIM can stay inactive before it’s disconnected. At present your SIM is considered inactive if you have not made a call, sent a text, used any data, topped up, or purchased a bundle at least once in 270 days (otherwise you’ll be disconnected and your number lost), but from the aforementioned date this period will be cut to just 180 days.

Early warnings about the above will be sent at 90 days of inactivity, and another reminder will follow 45 days before your SIM is due to disconnect. As for the key PAYG1 changes, they are as follows.

Current price

You pay 20p for each:

– Voice call to standard UK numbers, landlines and voicemail
– Texts to standard UK numbers
– MMS to standard UK numbers
– 5MB UK data

Once the £1 daily spend cap is reached, you unlock unlimited minutes, texts, MMS and 500MB data to use until midnight that day. On the days you don’t use your phone, you won’t pay anything.

New Price (12th January 2021)

You pay £1 a day once you send a text, make a call or use any data and get:

– Unlimited voice calls to standard UK numbers, landlines and voicemail
– Unlimited texts to standard UK numbers
– Unlimited MMS to standard UK numbers
– 50MB UK data

On the days you don’t do this, you won’t pay anything.

The reaction to this will depend upon how you make use of the tariff, although for those who only make limited use of the plan then it may work out more expensive. The £1 extra data boost will also now only give you just 50MB instead of the previous 500MB and that’s very poor (these days 50MB can easily be gobbled up by visiting just a few websites).

Finally, the ‘per minute’ price of calling “non-standard numbers“, such as non-geographic numbers (starting 084 or 087) or personal numbering services (starting 070) among others, will all jump from 45p today to 55p in January. Vodafone are clearly keen to push users toward their other plans, although it seems more likely to push many of them toward rival operators. Credits to one of our readers, Steve, for spotting this.

The drop in data is a real kick. This will definitely push users to other networks for those wanting to stay on PAYG.
EE & Vodafone have been trying to push users of PAYG for some time.

The new inactive time limit of 6 months is reasonable. I actually thought it was 6 months anyway. I don’t see why anyone would have a phone & not use it in that amount of time.

Three has the best PAYG imo. I use them for my work number and the rates are extraordinarily cheap. I don’t like how operators such as Voda and EE are trying to get people on contracts as it IS THE CUSTOMER’S DECISION! I think it is really unfair and they need to stop.

  2. Avatar photo Rollers says:

Plenty more better offers out there. Ditch and save with another vendor

  3. Avatar photo Phil says:

I guess this is because a lot of SIM cards on PAYG these days are used for other things, i.e. burglar alarms, which very infrequently use any credit. We had a burglar alarm with a Vodafone SIM in it that would only send a message if it was set off or to respond to incoming calls for remote control. So you could sit on £10 worth of credit for a very long time, but of course the SIM card is still on the network using resources and costing the network money. So it is understandable if they know they have a large amount of SIMs on the Network that hardly ever make a chargeable text or call to try and recoup some extra cash the odd time they do.

  4. Avatar photo Lee says:

Seeing that they are trying to push people on to one of their monthly bundle’s, it would of made sense if they had kept the £5 bundle package. Instead they scraped that and made £10 the minimum bundle on offer.
That may be a bit steep for someone who could easily get by on payg1 for about £30 a year.

    1. Avatar photo Buggerlugz says:

Absolutely. Its like they don’t want SIM-only customers any more. Message received and understood.

    2. Avatar photo Jmm says:

Replying to this in mid January is rather irrelevant but I’ve only just discovered this tariff change and I have to say they’re really going to miss out on me because I have often used this voda number on payg 1 daily giving them to full 30 quid a month and sometimes even more because I refuse to carry or store card numbers now and occasionally pay voda for their 3 quid loaner credit at a silly price nevertheless worth not giving them a card number to my view.

Literally the only reason why voda was getting a whole 30 pcm was the data allowance east reasonable for the single day.

Now that calling over voip is going to incur much more expense I’m through with Vodafone

I’ve recently begun a contract with EE after the most abortive experience with Vodafone.

It wasn’t ever going to stop making them money this phone I’m using now and I reckon they must have had at least 200 pa from me over the lifetime of this sim card.

I did notice that this payg1 iPhone SE v1 now has visual voice mail provided

That’d have been great for my much older brother who still receives voice mails. But the data costs too late now.

I can just hotspot off my other phone in my other pocket but I’ve never been happy compensating for deprivations.

EVEN 100 MB might have been enough.
      – get VVM – 2 outgoing calls voip 45 minutes and 4 cellular calls 20 minutes each plus checking emails 3 times a day. Possible just about possible with a little bit of give. No giving with the new regime and I reckon they will experience the similar come next bonus time as consequence.

Vodafone are the worst out, I’m sick of them Greedy b*****ds
I’m PAYG had £10 big value bundle pack didn’t renew it as I was
Looking elsewhere I ended up getting voucher to renew pack & they had
Put me onto pay as go 1 pack, So that’s the last £10 they get from me
& Lee you can still get £5 bundle That’s what my Mam & Da get

  5. Avatar photo Spurple says:

Migrate your sim to Zevvle. Better PAYG pricing. Something like a small monthly fee, and then 3p per call/text.

    1. Avatar photo Spuroke says:

      3p per minute, I mean.

    2. Avatar photo Mml says:

Isn’t Three PAYG also 3p per minute, but with no monthly fee?

    3. Avatar photo Michael V says:

      @MML. Yeah. Three charge 3p a min. 2p text. 1p mb.

Also, new MVNO ToTheMoonMobile.com have recently launched. Definitely worth a look at their pre pay plans. [They use EE’s networks.]
I use them for my mobile number 2.

    4. Avatar photo Spurple says:

@Mml, With three, don’t you have to top up periodically, so that if you’re a light user, you wind up accumulating a lot of unused credit over time?

Also, they seem to have raised their prices.

    5. Avatar photo Buggerlugz says:

Yes, they raised them this morning so they’re more in line with Vodafone. I did however discover that uswitch offers are still valid, so if you are lucky you can get the carriers to price match.

  6. Avatar photo Name says:

Looks like Vodafone want to get rid of their PAYG customers.

    1. Avatar photo Web Guy says:

Three scrapped their 3-2-1 Tariff. Not sure if it still works that way for existing users, but there was a price hike in the summer, from memory. Anyway, for anyone who has been getting 3-2-1 rates, they can, on a whim, scrap it even for existing users (they did that around 2014/15 when they withdrew the “One Plan” which had quite generous limits – 3000 minutes plus 2000 Three-to-Three minutes, unlimited data and thousands of text too. They wiped it out and then sent “your new tariff” messages. I quit when they told me they wanted to charge £26/month ~66% rise.

    2. Avatar photo Mike says:

I’ve never been on Vodafone. Their Pay As You go are expensive!!
The cheapest PAYG service is 1p Mobile. Calls are 1p/minute, 1p/text & 1p/mb for data. You have to top up at least £10 every 120 days (4 months approx.) otherwise they’ll disconnect you from the network.
If you don’t want to pay the new THREE PayG prices you could get their Pay As You Go Data Reward Sim. It costs only 3p/minute 2p/text 1p/mb and you can get 200mb of data every month.

  7. Avatar photo Buggerlugz says:

Being in the market currently for a sim only contract I’ve got to admit I was very disappointed with Vodafone’s offering. Its not in the least bit competitive with anyone else, even EE. Which makes me wonder that they’d rather ditch Sim only altogether and just sell phones on 2 year contracts, it being more profitable.

So I won’t be moving to Voda then.

    1. Avatar photo Web Guy says:

May be worth looking at Asda perhaps.

Uses EE now, and the charges not quite as low as before at 5p per MB on data (was 2p per MB previously on Voda)… Voice and Texts still at 8p + 4p respectively.

    2. Avatar photo lee says:

They won’t be getting rid of sim only altogether, but they want monthly paying customers either way hence the bundles they offer.
It is still payg but guarantees them a monthly top up.
Was more reasonable when they had a £5 bundle, but they’ve scrapped that and made their minimum bundle £10 which may be a bit hard to swallow for occasional users.

    3. Avatar photo Jack says:

Careful with ASDA that Web Guy references. I’m having trouble with them and my SIM at the moment not registering and wont let me do anything. Getting my PAC code to leave there withholding it from me which I requested 2 days ago but wont let me text to get it.plus come January there migrating back to Vodafone from EE which no doubt will be horrendous as it was before as I had to get another SIM for a £1 from a store then call up and ask them to port it to the new asda sim.

My Aunt, 94, who is homebound due to medical conditions…was on the Pay as you go tariff, set up by her son.
      Mar 3 2021…£40.00 credit by Mar 10th £6.25…. Ar 11th…1.75
      She’s made 22 calls .
The phone she has is only used to contact myself…. if she needs help or make a shopping request. a couple of occasions she has ran into the voicemail aspect .
Speaking with Voda…eventually they applied a £15 over charge credit???
The assurance from operator customer services on March 10th Credit then £6.25!All will be sorted and put right.
Mar 11th…credit was £1.75 another 4.50 gone for 1 call and including a ashort VM.
Called C. Services…same old blurb it will be sorted and overcharge credit was applied.
My questions basically is this standard behaviours for Voda and vulnerable clients?

needless to say …it’s bye bye Voda. BTW their customer service system is cr*p!

  8. Avatar photo Jonathan Hussey says:

What an absolutely blatant money-grabbing measure. For customers like me who make minimal use of the PAYG tariff and as such it doesn’t make sense to go with a contract, these changes will definitely prompt me to move to another plan and quite possibly another network. At least they didn’t try to make it out like it’s for the customers benefit as is usual when large companies put their prices up.

    1. Avatar photo Ry says:

Apparently Asda either already are, or shortly will be, changing their signal provider to Vodafone, which may suit some whose best signal is via Vodafone.

  9. Avatar photo Owen Smith says:

So is it possible to return to standard Vodafone Pay As You Go not PAYG1? I remember having to ask to switch to PAYG1, the simplest thing is going to be to switch back. I never buy any bundles, I just want a cheap pay as you go. I normally spend about £20 a year on it. And where my parents live is a bit of a not spot, Vodafone have the best coverage so I’d like to stay with them.

    1. Avatar photo Toria says:

That’s exactly what I want to do, but am having no joy from Vodafone on that matter. Their suggestion so far is that I buy a bundle – but since apart from occasional days I rarely send more than a couple of texts, a bundle is pointless. My phone doesn’t have data either. Trouble is, Vodafone have the best coverage for my area.

    2. Avatar photo Owen Smith says:

Does buying a bundle and then letting it expire work? Is that a way to get off Pas You Go Go 1? I realise there’s a one off cost to doing it.

  10. Avatar photo Pete says:

Vodafone told me yesterday that my PAYG sim was cut off after 3 months of inactivity, despite having over £10 credit on it, not 240 days. Cant have the number or my money back

    1. Avatar photo Michael says:

Did the same to me and took £14 in the process, said they couldn’t do a thing as account info deleted, and can’t be retrieved,I used the phone same day they messaged me, literally unbelievable, its theft

    2. Avatar photo Howard says:

Vodafone also lost all my info without warning and without notice on 27th Jan. First I knew was when I got a ‘SIM registration failed’ message. The phone’s my emergency one, had since 2006, made sure used every 180 days to keep it active, and topped up only when I needed to top up.

I was basically just blanked by Vodafone, who insisted I hadn’t used the phone for more than ninety days (not 180), on the contrary I had – the Call Register had the evidence (until it disappeared, mysteriously so since it ‘couldn’t’ connect to the network). They refused to refund my credit and refused to unlock the phone.

My formal complaint was answered this afternoon, saying I should get a new SIM, they would refund the cost, and transfer my lost credit (although I had terrible difficulty understanding what the chap was telling me, so I’ve probably got it wrong). But I cannot work out what kind of new SIM I should get – a PAYG bundle kills off unused credit after one rollover so that’s no good, and PAYG1 seems to be the nearest yet all I see are people getting charged £1 for switching their phone on so that doesn’t seem so smart.

I only want/need a mobile phone for emergencies when my wife and I both need a mobile phone each at the same time – as has happened twice in the last two months.

Nothing these days seems suitable. So much for progress.

  11. Avatar photo Michael V says:

Yeah…. I had the text message letting me know.
But I only have a Vodafone PAYG sim as it’s cheaper to call Canada at 1p.

  15. Avatar photo Thermionick says:

This 500% or so hike made me look for a better deal to suit me. I’m switching to 1pmobile – 1p per minute /text/ MB.

Vodaphone promptly refunded my recent top-up and gave me PAC to transfer my number. I’ve been very happy with Vodaphone and frankly I’m sad to be pushed out but c’est la vie.

BTW, I have no connection with 1pmoble.

    1. Avatar photo Matt Gee says:

You’re lucky, they’re refusing to refund me. They just keep sending me the same copy/paste response. My requests to escalate the issue have also been ignored. Bunch of incompetent a-holes!

  16. Avatar photo Dennis M V Tweed says:

I purchased a pay as you go top-up voucher for £10 with the Vodafone company and have been trying to activate it since the 02/12/2020. I found out this morning 13/12/2020 that this voucher had been redeemed on the day that I purchased it. I haven’t redeemed it as my phone was never updated with the credit. So what is going on with VODAFONE, are they just getting very greedy. Well they have just lost another customer.

Well played Vodaphone, give a month’s notice to withdraw a service in the middle of winter, coming up to the holiday season and during a pandemic. Cue the elderly and vulnerable heading out to mobile shops in an attempt to understand what’s going on and find another provider. Astonishingly insensitive. Let’s all clap for Vodaphone.

    1. Avatar photo Ry says:

Absolutely spot on. Basically, Vodafone are now charging me £365 annually just to switch my mobile on once a day to take photos whilst out walking my dog, even if I make 0 calls and send 0 texts.

Absolutely outrageous, what a bunch of scammers Vodafone are. And they won’t even refund the £21 credit I had left. They deserve to lose every single customer they had, and I hope they do.

      I’m off to giff-gaff

    2. Avatar photo Paul says:

I am very upset also, I have not used my mobile for some months as been housbound for last year due to pandemic as I cerbral palsy, severe copd, demetia and other health problems, so just been using my landline and only was a light user emergencys for my mobile, I realise today it disconected and lost 23 pound and lost my number i have had 12 years, i more upset about loosing my number, I also have mild demetia and could still remeber my number, i am struggling to find and understand to get a new chip and package as so many, they say my number lost but i rang it and is not in use or given to anyone, disconected mid january

  20. Avatar photo Elle says:

for me its the data part which is wrong. That is a 90% reduction for the same price. Which one of us could reduce the amount of work we do in one area by 90% and still get paid. I need that data and I have complained to vodafone about this. I’m also looking into the rules about payg price hikes. Surely there has to be some limitations on this – as it is a price rise in disguise

  21. Avatar photo Christopher Jones says:

Wow, look at the comments on here, I thought that I was the only one having problems with vodafone.I was changed to PAYG 1 without my permission some time ago with a “hike to the the charges at that time. Various attempts have been made by vodafone to move me to a bundle or contract to which i always refuse as I am a low user. I mad an official complaint about what they are doing and finally got a message today(boxing day!!!!!) saying they will contact me between 14:00 – 16:00hrs to discuss my complaint. Got the call on time was a lady called “ANAMIKA” i could not understand a word…. put her on speakerphone, it was even worse so i said i was terminating the call from her which i did and was promptly contacted again by her. Her english was so poor i could barely make out a sentence and promptly hung up again. I am well P”””””D with lack of proper communication from a communication company HA HA!!! What a joke vodafone are becomming.I of course will be leaving (at my own convenience) when i find a better provider for the occasional user. Let it be known I have been with vodafone since 1995. looks like vodafone are itroducing this in the middle of a pandemic ’cause they wouldn’t get away with it after….. i feel they are trying to force you onto a bundle or contract SHAME ON YOU VODAFONE!!!!!

  22. Avatar photo John Rowlands says:

well I thought that I was alone in this!! but having read all these comments after being on chat line for an hour and got no where!! it seems that I’m vindicated with all this, And all the person was interested in was getting me onto bundles, and couldn’t or didn’t want to understand my problem, as being a light user it was going to cost much more for me with their new format as offered at £1.00 per txt or call per day!! I’ll be on the look out for a new provider!!!

Having read the above, I can only wholeheartedly agree. This is a bare-faced money grab by Vodafone, and an undisguised attempt to get us low volume users off their system. Where else coul you hike the price by 500%!

  26. Avatar photo Stephen Cooper says:

I’ve been a Vodafone customer for over twenty years, mainly on their original PAYG tariff. I’m a pensioner who owns a basic Nokia phone that only does voice calls and texts. I rarely make more than one call a week: PAYG1 was ideal for users like me. I transferred to PAYG1 on 7th September 2020 after having been charged £16.58 for three texts and two phone calls (totalling 39m 15s) in one day to my brother’s fiancée. Therefore, you can all blame me, and people like me, for reducing Vodafone’s multi-billion pound cash-flow to a point where they believe they have to squeeze their customers until the pips squeak. Vodafone texted me on 7th January to notify me of the tariff hike on the 12th (today) but my repeated searches of their website between 7th and 11th January did not present any information of what the new tariffs would be. If I accept their “£5 Big Value Bundle” offer, I’ll be paying £60/year, mostly in charges for data that I cannot use. All my calls and texts are to UK network numbers so, in accordance with the spirit of Brexit, I’ll look for an alternative and affordable UK mobile supplier. Thanks to other commenters for their suggestions. Voda can focus on its German homeland customers: good riddance to them.

    1. Avatar photo Lynda Andrews says:

The same thing is happening to me, getting a daily message reminding me of their £1 per day offer. As soon as I click on the message £1 is swiped from my credit even if I don’t want to use the phone. Seems we are paying for their own message!
A complete rip off, is this legal?

Have contacted Vodaphone today about same problem.Apparently data programmes run in the background even if you never use internet on your phone. As I only use my phone for calls and text, they have blocked data use on my phone which should solve the problem.

  29. Avatar photo Dave Simmons says:

I am having the same palaver with Vodaphone. My phone does only voice and texts, and those not very often as I have a perfectly good landline phone where I, and my wife, can chat for an hour at a time for a small monthly charge. They say they have tried to contact me, but there is no records of missed calls [I gave them my landline number as an alternative, but that is obviously too easy for them.] I suspect that I am wasting my time with them and should seek another provider. Incidentlaly, has anyone noticed that Vodaphone annual profits are in the region of £4 billion [£4,000,000,000]? Lovely people.

  30. Avatar photo Clive howell says:

We are on pay as you go and am now getting charged £1 every time we switch our phone on. Not even use it. That is why we chose this sim as we very rarely use it. Even less now as it would be cheaper to get a £10 contract a month as it now costs £30 just switching the phone on. Called 2 days ago to complain. Meant to call us back tomorrow. Doubt that happen. Not got credit back and still happening. Doubt in a hurry to fix.

  31. Avatar photo TradWarrior says:

The whole point of a PAYG SIM is that many people do not WANT to go on a monthly contract and in any case only use their phone to send and receive calls or texts.
I have a perfectly good desk-top computer for all else!
Not only do I not want to be trapped in a monthly contract or a ‘bundle’ – whatever that is – but a PAYG allows me freedom and more importantly anonymity. I believe THAT is the real reason, apart from greed, for the major networks wanting to cut customers adrift. My other mobile was with VirginMedia: they did a similar thing by disconnecting all the old red SIMs and offering to send out the new purple sims, but in order to do that they needed our addresses, which is one of the very things we don’t WANT to do! I did some research and discovered that they new purple SIMs would only work in 4G or 5G phones, and I like my old Nokia: it does everything I want it to!
    1) They don’t make enough money from us 2) They want to gather data and info about everyone in the country. It’s all a vast conspiracy by Big Tech so that they have us all enslaved.

  32. Avatar photo Ry says:

Good to find so many others as outraged as I am! Amazingly, this issue with now being charged £1 daily by Vodafone for just switching your mobile on, even if you make 0 calls & send 0 texts, hasn’t even been mentioned on MoneysavingExpert.com or Which? consumer magazine, but let’s take it to those places & highlight the scam there, folks, make sure Vodafone’s name stinks as it should.

We live in a signal blackspot, I cannot make calls or send texts from within our house, but usually get 1 or 2 bars when out walking the mutt once daily, so switch my phone on in case I need it for emergency use or to take photos, as it takes a minute to warm up. The only exceptions to such usage were reading incoming texts from Vodafone on 3 separate days about this change to their charges, for which I got charged £3. Then I got charged £1 on all the other days that I switched the phone on, even though I did nothing with it.

What a flamin scam! I’m trying to switch to Giff-Gaff, but Vodafone won’t even refund me the £21 that’s left on my account despite an hour talking to their rep (45 mins on hold) and 1.25 hours in an online chat session with another adviser. Nor can I get a PACS to transfer my number as their online software doesn’t work!! (won’t recognise that you’ve filled in required field of 11 digit mobile number, keeps saying you must enter 11-digit mobile number …doh). What a shower of sh..e Vodafone are. Grrr!

  33. Avatar photo June Curtis says:

Since the change to PAYG1 in January I get charged £1 most days, even when I have NOT used my Mobile for Texts/Phone calls, plus the Vodafone Text Message about “unlimited texts/minutes/data etc.” comes through at the same time, mostly a just after midnight (when I am asleep). Vodafone say its free if you don’t use it, but my Mobile is not. No one at Vodafone seems to be able to rectify this problem and I’ve reported it over 12 times. I’ve never had this problem before the PAYG1 change – MY LANDLINE/BROADBAND IS WITH BT – just my Mobile Phone with Vodafone. I think I shall have to change providers unless someone talks to me from Vodafone a.s.a.p. and correct this fault.

  34. Avatar photo Maureen Green says:

So glad I discovered I am not alone. I am having the same problem with being charged £1 per day each time I switch on my phone. What a money maker for Vodafone!. I am confined to home being at risk from Covid so use my laptop for emails and landline for voice calls. I only ever use my mobile for Whats App. I opened my mobile this morning at 10 am to discover Vodafone had sent me a message at midnight to say I now had unlimited texts minutes and 50mb of data. By 10 am I only had 47 mb of data left but that was the first time I had switched on. Have since tried to contact Vodafone. Not at all happy. Will be looking for alternatives.

I am also glad to find am not alone. Have been on to Vodafone all morning as I’ve been getting charged £1 a day when I haven’t used the phone at all – like others mention it seems background data runs whether you have data on your phone switched off or not. I found I could switch off the background data in some apps but not the Android app. Also, when I looked at the usage breakdown in My Vodafone I can see I’ve been charged some days when Internet usage shows as zero. Vodafone have refunded me and turned my data off. The problem is that some days I do need data when I’m out and about and to get it I need to remember to log into my account before I go out to switch it back on again…I’m torn between switching provider or getting a bundle because it’s not worth the hassle…hate to let the man win though:-(

My 78 year old mum who only uses her mobile to send a single text once in a blue moon was very upset to find she had been charged £1 for sending a single text. I’ve ordered a giffgaff sim for her but in the meantime she has £20 left so at least can send a further 20 texts…thanks for nothing vodafone…

I only discovered this yesterday when I made a ten second call late in the evening to check the phone was working and then got a message saying I now had unlimited calls and texts for the rest of the day. So £1 for ten seconds use.

The phone I was testing is one I keep in the car for emergencies. A couple of years ago it proved its worth when my car broke down in the middle of the New Forest, ironically on the way back from getting it serviced.

I wonder how many other people want an emergency phone? I remember when the AA would sell you a discounted phone which could only call them and the emergency services for that very reason.

I will probably stick with Vodafone due to the good coverage but hopefully won’t make another call until July.

Vodafone have form on this. They used to do a non expiring Data Sim which was ideal for infrequent users such as people going on holiday (remember those). Once they were no longer available the SIMs were changing hands on Ebay for over £50. Then one day they announced that the data would expire at the end of the month.

My usual mobile phone is on an EE tariff which gives me everything I need for a rolling £1 a week. I just hope EE don’t change that.

Trying to settle a problem with Vodafone is like trying to nail jelly on the wall – they are good at kicking the can down the road.

Another really cross customer of Vodafone having put over to Pay you go1. I want to change to another provider but want to keep my same number. I used to top up by £20 which lasted me about 6 to 10 weeks. I use my mobile for texts and calls and What’s App but nothing else. Can anyone suggest another provider for pay as you go, please? Also, how do I do the change (not being very tech savvy on this kind of thing.) normally I’d go to a shop and ask them to do it but they are closed temporarily or permanently now. Any advice gratefully received.

Absolutely outraged vodaphone is a scam I’ve topped up and they have taken a pound to only give me 50mb what a joke I used to get 500mb which was much better do not recommend at all and will be changing to O2 where we get better worth of our money not happy

I have a Vodafone pay as you go smart phone and agree with all of the above comments.
I only use my phone occasionally and never turn my phone off.
My credit always remains the same unless I use it with these new rip off charges.
I will monitor my credit in case it does change.
The data is always turned off but the phone is connected to my home wi-fi for data or updates etc.
I have received a text to try and take my existing phone and number over to monthly contract from £7 a month.
The data allowance is 500mb with unlimited calls and texts.
I have just checked the website for pay as you go migration and now the data is 2GB. 1/3/21
The other monthly contracts at £9, £11, £13 have had their data allowances increased.
    The £17, £20, £24 and £32 data usage remains unchanged.1/3/21
We are all on pay as you go for very light usage reasons so why the hell do we want to pay these horrendous prices ?
Vodafone will be loosing customers hand over fist.
I was sent a text as they tried to contact me by phone, NO they did not.
Just put some credit on my phone which could be my last.

I don’t know if this is a problem or not for me. I have a Vodafone PAYG number on which I might make two calls per month;it is always active for incoming calls from my 94-year-old father.

I hope you are reading this Vodafone. I have had a long running complaint with them for nearly 3 months as I was being overcharged on the ‘old’ PAYG1 tariff at 35p per minute instead of 20p. Many, many times a Vodafone customer service rep called me and NOT ONCE has he told me that the tariff had changed. I only found out today when I wondered where all my credit had gone to and why I had been charged £1 for a call which lasted a few seconds. I, too, am a light user and will now be looking for a different provider. Vodafone – you don’t know what’s going on, you can’t or won’t explain what’s going on to your customers, and you’re trying to steal money which isn’t yours. I can only think that your ambition is to have zero customers left because that’s the way you’re heading.

This is a real bummer Vodafone UK! I transferred my number across to Voda PAYG1 before I left the UK and currently live abroad – I have my UK banking and other services still linked to my UK number and it’s handy when I visit Europe once per year. Whilst the long expiry is still welcome, with this 50MB alowance decreased from 500MB per day it’s a bit useless for my Europe trips.

Thanks whoever suggested moving to Lebara (who use Vod network). The £5 contract is still excessive for what I need but I only get full bars on Vod (-74db, rest are above -110db). Amusingly I can now call my colleagues in the US for free as a bonus ha.
My dad worked in telecoms in the early 2000s and said back then the operators all disliked PAYG, so at least we got a good 20 years out of it.
