Internet provider Sky Broadband has today confirmed that, as per last week’s partial launch announcement (here), their new Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ (2.5Gbps) and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ (5Gbps) packages are now available to order online via CityFibre’s growing UK FTTP broadband network (available to c.4.5 million homes).
The two new packages – priced at £70 a month for 2.5Gbps and £80 a month for 5Gbps on a 24-month term with the Wi-Fi 7 capable router and Wi-Fi Max add-on available “at no extra cost” – could initially only be purchased in Sky’s stores and via their call centres. But from today you can finally place an order for these via Sky’s website too.
The online launch also enables us to confirm that the post-contract pricing for each package is currently £75 and £85 per month, respectively. But we suspect those seeking the best balance of speed and affordability on CityFibre’s network may find Sky’s 900Mbps tier (£38 per month and then £49 post-contract) to be much more viable, although this lacks their new Wi-Fi 7 kit.

CityFibre are also supporting Sky’s slower FTTP broadband packages and the prices, which are also available via Openreach’s national network.
Overkill? Why would you need that speed
For the typical person there is no need, but there are plenty of professions where having access to this much bandwidth is a blessing.
That didn’t take lomg…
“Overkill? Why would you need that speed”
Said somebody just like you with every performance jump since 56k
Just because you don’t, some people so live in multi occupancy home (big families)
James – even a “big family” cannot possibly use 2.5Gbps. That’s tens of 4k streams at once! It’s pure bragging rights and has no purpose, not for many more years. Forget Wi-Fi, even a gigabit wired connection by definition cannot saturate the uplink. How many people have 2.5gig ethernet rigs running at home so far?
If you want it, fair enough it’s a free country (theoretically at least). The real issue is to make sure customers aren’t being sold something they don’t need.
Bragging rights over the mere muggles in the IT dept at work…
Jealous John? Stuck on a 38mb fttc line are you?
I have 2.5gbps download, router and switches so my pc can download at the max. I fully utilise this when downloading games etc.
If work had a faster enough firewall then I would use it for work as well.
@mike, a bit different now, going from dial up to ADSL, made a hell of a difference, certainly when communication online via video, it was around then, but naff due to dial up. n So then we had stuff that could take advantage of ADSL, even streaming in a limited way.
ADSL to FTTC, again a fair bit of a jump, that allowed people to do more, download files faster, because those days people used to download a lot of files, higher quality streaming, better for gamers and more people can use the net at the same time in the house.
The majority of people could to be honest can cope with 75Mb/s or there about. A lot of people don’t download the huge amount of files they used to as they have gone to phones or tablets and not computers. Yes, I know about gamers. People don’t normally download films these days, they are streamed.
In other words, the speeds up to 1Gb/s is ample for the majority of people, even with a large family, you would need a mansion with a huge family to need anything faster. I don’t anything is going to need speeds faster than to be honest 150Mb/s or even less.
At the end of the day it is up to people if they make the choice to have higher speeds as long as they realise that they’re paying more for something they may not use the full benefit of. Most things still come with a 1Gigabit Ethernet, so is limited that way, Wi-Fi is not good for fast speeds and a lot of people will have devices that can not cope with faster speeds.
My problem is that these providers will try and talk people into getting these higher speeds and charging more for them. Sadly, some people will not realise that they don’t need that speed and think that it will make a difference.
As I said above, if people want to pay the extra, then fine, their money, but I don’t want to see those get talked into paying more for something don’t need.
Seen it before
Haha I came here for this comment.
I’ve been following this site for maybe 15 years. Every jump in technology, from ISDN onwards, has had this comment in the news thread.
Well done.
existing customers are being offered 5 gbps for £75 via the app, 2.5 gbps does not appear as an option for me in the app. I am not a sky broadband customer but i am in a cityfibre area.
Not showing for me, have checked a relatively newly built CityFibre area (definitely XGS-PON) and the Lit Fibre acquired network that is also XGS-PON.
I just checked a couple of Ipswich addresses, they are showing both the 2.5G and 5G speeds for me.
It does appear only the 5G is shown on the initial page but you then get a much larger list of speeds including the 2.5G one.
Only showing OR services for me up to 1Gb. I’m already with CityFibre on 2.5Gb service so strange no CityFibre options at all!!
I live in a multi occupied building, and for some reason I can only get 50mb broadband for I pay £31pm, and it’s really irritating when I see the likes of sky advertising the likes of fibre 500 + a TV package for £5 more than what I’m paying.
We who live in this building must be the only people in St Helens that still get their Internet down a telephone line because none of the services are offering anything else.
Available in Torry Aberdeen
Wow
It’s good you can get it and if you can get them speeds why not but when there are a lot of places flats / mdu’s which do not have fttp only fttc capped 35mb line. Openreach and others could get everyone over the line for fttp first.
