Full Fibre Giffgaff Broadband Packages Available in Some Virgin Media UK Areas
Mobile and internet provider giffgaff, which initially launched their full fibre broadband packages via nexfibre’s national network in September 2025 (here), has confirmed to ISPreview that new customers in many Fibre Up (Project Mustang) areas on Virgin Media’s national FTTP (XGS-PON) network can now also take their packages.
In case anybody has forgotten, Fibre Up / Project Mustang reflects Virgin Media’s programme of upgrading their old Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network areas to also support 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology. This is separate from nexfibre’s build into new areas (those not previously covered by Virgin’s existing networks).
At launch giffgaff could only access part of nexfibre’s newly built network (currently covering a total of 2.4 million UK premises), but ISPreview now understands that this started to change in February 2026 after the provider gained access to some of Virgin Media’s Fibre Up areas too – we assume on the same sort of wholesale terms as via nexfibre.

Currently, giffgaff broadband is now said to be available across more than 4 million full fibre homes (including 2.4m Fibre Up homes), with this footprint continuing to expand. But we should caveat that this doesn’t yet include any of the c.2m HFC areas that nexfibre are due to upgrade to FTTP as part of the £2bn Netomnia acquisition (example), although we’d of course expect that to change in the future.
We should point out that a total of 8.7 million Virgin Media and nexfibre premises (footprint) are now covered by FTTP lines (XGS-PON and some RFOG technology), so there’s still plenty of room for giffgaff’s availability to expand over the coming months and that combined footprint is also continuing to grow more generally.
However, one catch for existing Virgin Media customers to be aware of – both in Fibre Up and nexfibre areas – is that they still cannot switch directly to giffgaff via an automated process (here), which means you often have to cancel your existing service from Virgin before being able to join.

It’s definitely still not working properly. Checked two eligible postcodes and zero packages are available.
They’ve only recently started expanding into Fibre Up areas, so a lot of locations won’t yet have any availability. But the above is directly from giffgaff.
There are addresses in Leeds where availability has been enabled on the Mustang network. I noticed one last week. However, there is still no way for serving VM customers to place an order so they will continue to be frustrated!

I had to cancel my VM package first before being able to order with them, so switching is not possible (unless that has changed). Granted, once my line was disconnected with VM, I could order within a few hours, but I was left around 1 week without any broadband, thankfully I could use my phone as a modem temporarily.
So, it looks like Giffgaff wants to focus on people who are currently using Docsis connections, and they hope to upgrade them to Giffgaff as their contracts expire.
The thing is, we want to switch to Giffgaff next month from Virgin Media / Nexfibre FTTP. At least we already have a 4/5g router, after the VM service ends.

Well they are going about it in a very odd way! At the moment the only properties that *cannot* place an order with GG in those areas are the ones currently on VM DOCSIS! They need to sort out migrations now or this whole scheme risks coming off the rails with even more customer dissatisfaction than they already have (if that is even possible!)
I had to cease my nexfibre based VM (I was going to anyway as I have OR FTTP also) – in order to get giffgaff. Much happier with giffgaff as a backup service.
I just checked a Mustang area and it is showing as available, which is perfect as it is my mum’s house and we’ve been trying to sort a new connection, the older DOCIS network is shot and VM are only showing full fibre on the 2G product.
She has 3Mbits/s ADSL from BT and with the phone is paying £68+ !! GiffGaff 200Mbits/s at £5 for 6 months then £25 for the remaining 18 months looks perfect. Move the phone to VoIP with A&A or similar for a couple of quid and all sorted (mobile for outbound calls).
I checked where I am and that says no, so it looks like whilst they’ve completed Mustang around here those of us on one of the last RFoG installs have remained on that 🙁

I’m in a Mustang area (Wirral) and GiffGaff Fibre is available to order. Openreach FTTP has been available here for over 4 years and many houses have it so it will be interesting to see what impact GiffGaff/VM Fibre has, they’ve got an awful lot of catching up to do.
