BT Group Sees FTTP Broadband Reach 3.5 Million UK Premises

The BT Group has today published their Q2 2020/21 results, which saw Openreach expand their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.5 million UK premises (up from 2.98m last quarter). The full fibre build rate has now hit 40,000 premises per week (up from c.34,000).

O2 UK to Donate 10,000 Mobiles and Free Service to Digitally Excluded

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) will today extend their existing partnership with Hubbub (here), with the aim being to donate 10,000 devices and 12 months of free calling and internet connectivity to “digitally excluded people” in UK cities that are either facing, or at risk of, new Tier 3 lockdown restrictions (COVID-19).

Openreach Give UK ISPs More Control of Broadband DLM Profiles

Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs with Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and G.fast broadband lines that they will “soon” be deploying functionality that allows providers who wish to purchase this to amend Dynamic Line Management (DLM) profiles on customer lines, which sounds as if it may be more flexible than prior approaches.

BT and EE Pick Ericsson to Supply 5G Mobile in Major UK Cities

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today unsurprisingly chosen Ericsson to be their new supplier for ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) deployments across major UK cities, such as London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and more. The move marks a further step away from Huawei, which has been banned.

SpaceX Prices Starlink’s Beta LEO Satellite Broadband Service

Good news, SpaceX has unofficially revealed how much they intend to charge open beta customers of their new Starlink Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband service. Bad news, it’ll set you back $99 (c.£75) per month for the service rental and $499 (c.£380) for the ground terminal, tripod and router hardware.

New 4G A2G Network Brings 100Mbps to In-Flight Broadband

Thales in the UK, working alongside Nokia and SkyFive, has today announced that their new 4G LTE Air to Ground (A2G) network is being made available to the global market, which could mean faster in-flight WiFi speeds of up to 100Mbps (shared between all of the passengers) and latency times of less than 50ms.

BT to Build UK’s First 5G Private Network in Belfast Harbour

BT has today announced that they will build and manage one of the UK’s “first” live 5G Private Network (5GPN) across Belfast Harbour in Northern Ireland, which will deliver a secure and ultrafast mobile broadband platform to reach the Port’s main operational areas.

RootMetrics Tests 5G Mobile Speeds for Cloud Gaming in London

Business ISP Air IT Acquires Netstar UK Ltd and Microtrading Ltd

Managed communications provider and ISP Air IT has acquired London-based Netstar UK Limited and Birmingham-based Microtrading Limited for undisclosed sums, which has enabled the group to effectively double its size in the space of just nine months, while also expanding more into London and the West Midlands.

B4RN’s CEO Becomes First Customer of 10Gbps Home Broadband

The CEO of rural UK full fibre ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), Barry Forde, has become the first person to sign-up to the provider’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) plan. The first live speed test of this produced a download speed of 8341Mbps and uploads of 6644Mbps, with latency of just 1ms.

Ofcom Extend Broadband ISP Switching and Ban Locked Mobiles

Ofcom UK has set out new measures that will make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate networks easier (e.g. Openreach to Cityfibre), but due to the complexities involved providers will be given until December 2022 implement it. Mobile operators will also be banned from selling “locked” handsets.

6,900 Homes in Dronfield Covered by Virgin Media UK’s FTTP

Some 6,900 homes in the North East Derbyshire town of Dronfield have just become the latest to benefit from the expansion of Virgin Media’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, although initially locals will only be able to access a top speed of 516Mbps (average) until the future DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade completes.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk Reveals UK Internet Usage Trends

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today published their first ‘Internet Insights‘ report, which is a quarterly analysis of the provider’s network data with bitesize insights about internet usage trends in the UK. For example, between July 2019 and June 2020 customers of their FTTP packages increased their usage by 108%.

End of Daylight Saving Time Negates Sky UK VoIP Timing Bug

Virgin Media UK Extend FTTP a Little in Blackburn and Darwen
