Gigaclear’s East Gloucestershire FTTP Broadband Rollout Contract Shrinks

The UK government has posted a Project Gigabit contract modification that shrinks Gigaclear’s £16.6m contract for rural parts of East Gloucestershire (Lot 18), which originally aimed to expand their gigabit-capable broadband network to 4,400 additional premises. But the change shrinks the value of this contract to £10.81m “due to removal of 899 premises” from its scope.

Wessex Internet to Expand South Wiltshire Project Gigabit Broadband Rollout

The UK Government (DSIT) appears set to expand their £18.8m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract with rural UK ISP Wessex Internet for South Wiltshire (LOT 30). This originally aimed to build their 10Gbps capable FTTP broadband network to cover “around” 14,500 hard-to-reach premises in the area (here), but will now look to reach 21,197 premises.

SpaceX Plan Cheap Starlink Community Broadband Sharing Service

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and globally via a massive constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), appears to have leaked out plans for a new “Community” product that could allow multiple subscribers to share access to the service via a single terminal (dish) in return for a cheaper rental.

Study Claims UK Public WiFi Networks Failing Child Safety Standards

A new study from Guest Metrics, which has a vested interest in selling content filtering solutions, claims to have identified “widespread failures in public WiFi compliance” after it identified that 80% of the venues it tested had no content filtering (no age checks, no splash pages, no logging) to protect children from adult content – a key part of the UK government’s new Online Safety Act (2023).

The ITS Technology Group, which runs various open access full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across parts of the United Kingdom, has today announced a new partnership with network asset reuse specialist AssetHUB that aims to “speed up fibre rollouts in major UK cities“.

Repair Ship Cable Vigilance Aims to Fix Shetland Subsea Fibre Break by Thursday

Good news. Broadband and mobile services on the remote Shetland and Orkney Islands (Scotland), which have been disrupted since part of the main SHEFA-2 (Faroese Telecom) submarine (subsea) fibre optic cable was damaged over a week ago (here), could be restored as soon as this Wednesday or Thursday after the French repair ship ‘Cable Vigilance‘ arrived.

Six Major UK Broadband ISPs Found to Lack an Internal Audit Function UPDATE

The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (CIIA) has today raised “serious concerns” about the financial resilience of the UK’s broadband sector, which appears to be based on the fact that six of the country’s thirteen “major” ISPs currently operate without an internal audit – potentially exposing them to “unchecked risks and increasing the likelihood of corporate collapse“.

Mobile Provider O2 UK to Remove Website Access for Priority Rewards

Customers of mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) have recently been notified that, from 11th August 2025, they will no longer be able to access the provider’s “Priority” service via the website. Priority exists to reward loyal subscribers with various special offers and discounts.

IX Wireless Remove 15m Metal Broadband Mast in Heywood After 2yr Campaign

A two-year-long campaign by residents and councillors in the Rochdale town of Heywood has succeeded in getting broadband provider IX Wireless (UK ISP 6Gi / Opus Broadband) to remove their 15-metre tall metal mast / pole on Snowden Street. The council said the structure had an “unsightly appearance” and that there had been “little or no consultation with local communities” before its deployment.

Network operator CityFibre, which has already deployed their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across around 4.5 million UK premises, recently indicated to Mobile Europe’s Digital Telco event that they would be looking to upgrade to 50G-PON or 100G-PON during the early to mid 2030s.

Qualcomm Reveals How Next Gen WiFi 8 Will Prioritise Reliability Over Speed

The development of the next gen Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn – Ultra High Reliability) standard – led by Task group IEEE802.11bn – is said to be making “steady progress” and, according to Qualcomm Technologies, a high-level of consensus has now been achieved on a significant portion of the future standard that will focus more on improving network reliability than speed.

Openreach Trial Panic Alarms for UK Broadband Engineers as Abuse Rises

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has begun to trial panic alarms for their staff after revealing that UK engineers reported 450 incidents of abuse and assault in the year to the end of March 2025, which is up 8% in the last year and represents a shocking 40% increase when compared with 2022-23. Other providers have seen a similar trend.

The problem began after they attempted to set an early date for the withdrawal of SMPF based broadband products (shared unbundled lines).

Court Rejects Second Appeal vs Dismissal of BT UK Landline Overcharging Case

The London Court of Appeal has refused permission for Justin Le Patourel to appeal against an earlier dismissal (here) of his £1.3bn class action claim against BT via the Collective Action on Land Lines (CALL) campaign. The organisation had accused the broadband and phone provider of overcharging several million of its landline-only phone customers.
