Alternative network operator Grain (Grain Connect), which has built their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network to cover over 220,000 UK premises and 30,000 customers, have maintained their promise of no mid-contract price hikes and also pledged to retain their current price freeze until 2027 (if you sign up before 21st Feb 2025).

Gov Reportedly Looking to Cut Support for £1bn Rural UK 4G Mobile Rollout

A major newspaper has reported that the Government may be looking to reduced their funding commitment for the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme and its efforts to extend 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage into remote rural areas. The move could significantly cut the number of mobile masts due to be built with public funding.

Openreach Reveal Storm Eowyn Badly Damaged Over 500 UK Telecoms Poles

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that Storm Éowyn (pronounced ‘Ay-oh-win’), which violently struck the United Kingdom at the end of last week on Friday 24th January 2025 (here and here), has so far left more than 500 broadband / telecoms poles “badly damaged“, with reports continuing to come in.

Residents living in new build homes on the ‘Mascalls Grange Estate’ in Paddock Wood (Kent, England), which was constructed by Persimmon Homes, have called for help after suffering a “nightmare” of protracted broadband outages. But locals have been unable to escape the developer’s sibling ISP, FibreNest, because they have a “monopoly” over the area.

Consultancy firm FarrPoint has published the first 2025 edition of their Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI), which ranks the G7 countries by the quality and coverage of their digital infrastructure (broadband, 5G etc.), as well as other areas like digital skills and online security etc. Overall, the United Kingdom continues to rank top and has improved its scores.

Virgin Media O2 UK to Donate 12,000 Smartphones in 2025

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today announced that they intend to donate “up to” 12,000 pre-owned Smartphones during 2025 (c.1,000 per month) to help people in need get online and reduce e-waste, which will be conducted in partnership with the Good Things Foundation and Hubbub.

BT Group Report Loss of 208,000 Total Openreach UK Broadband Lines

Telecoms giant BT Group has today published a brief trading update to the end of 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises in the last quarter (unchanged) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (total 17m) and saw related take-up rise by 472k (net adds) to total 6m (stable at 35%). But total broadband lines fell by 208k as rivals continue to bite.

Vodafone UK Beat Starlink with First Mobile to Mobile Video Call via Satellite

Mobile operator Vodafone UK today claims to have “beaten Elon Musk in the space race” by making the first mobile-to-mobile video call using a normal (unmodified) Smartphone and special satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) from partner AST SpaceMobile. This is essentially a space-based 4G and 5G mobile broadband service.

BT Propose to Cut up to 90 Jobs from Belfast HQ in Northern Ireland

Telecoms and UK broadband giant BT Group has reportedly proposed to make up to 90 staff redundant from their Belfast office, which is currently home to 2,000 colleagues from across the company, including EE, BT Business and Openreach. The group currently employs a total of 3,400 from across Northern Ireland.

Ofcom Publish 8th Annual Report into UK Net Neutrality Issues

Ofcom has today published their 8th annual (2025) monitoring report of the UK’s Net Neutrality rules (guidelines), which were originally established to prevent unfair blocking or slowing of access to legal websites and internet services by broadband ISPs and mobile operators (with some exceptions). Overall, the report found no major concerns.

Neos Networks to Lead Gigabit Broadband Upgrade in Notts and Derbyshire UK

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has today appointed Neos Networks to lead their £1.2m D2N2 Gigahubs project, which will work alongside Openreach (BT) and Netomnia to deploy a new full fibre gigabit broadband network to connect “up to” 28 public buildings (schools, NHS sites etc.) across rural parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
