Broadband ISP TalkTalk has today announced that they’ve started selling ‘Future Fibre‘ packages on Cityfibre’s new gigabit-speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in four UK cities and towns including Aberdeen, Bolton, Milton Keynes and Peterborough. Prices start at £32 per month for 147Mbps (symmetric).

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has just published its Annual Monitoring Report 2021, which among other things calls on the UK Government to set out a “workable plan” for ensuring that the hardest to reach homes and businesses can “get the benefits of high capacity broadband” (i.e. gigabit speed connectivity).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV advert for one of ISP Sky Broadband’s bundles with their Pay TV service, which featured the popular computer-animated Minions characters from Universal Pictures, after rival provider BT complained that the price offer was “misleading.“

Ofcom has today opened a further consultation on their plan to force all communications providers – seemingly including broadband ISPs that may not even provide phone services – to offer a “free” 24/7 emergency video relay service in order to help users of British Sign Language (BSL) to talk with the emergency services.

Customers of Sky’s (ISP Sky Broadband) various UK broadband, phone and Pay TV products are being warned to brace for yet another round of price hikes, which will be introduced between 1st April 2021 (internet and TV) and 1st May 2021 (phone). Notifications are being issued between 17th February and 27th March (email or post).

Business focused UK ISP Connectus has announced that more than 100 companies operating out of the large Winsford Industrial Estate in Cheshire (England) can now access gigabit-capable broadband speeds after the provider designed, funded and deployed a new network to the area.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has just published their latest Q4 2020 results, which saw their network coverage extend to another 115,000 premises and their internet access base add +54,700 new customers (up from +47k in the previous quarter) to total 5,420,100.

A long-running problem on Virgin Media’s broadband ISP network in Long Ditton, a residential suburb in the Borough of Elmbridge (Surrey, UK), has resulted in such slow speeds that some customers have resorted to unusual fixes, such as parking on neighbours driveways to borrow WiFi or returning to the office instead of working from home.

Alnwick-based broadband ISP Alncom, which has built a mix of rural-focused Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based networks, has today announced that they’ve secured an unspecified funding boost from strategic investors at Railsite Telecom to support their future expansion.

A new study by tax relief consultancy Catax, which analysed the latest data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), has reported that business investment in the UK telecoms sector has fallen for a fifth consecutive quarter and plummeted by 9.2% in Q3 2020 alone.

A new 2021 Worldwide Internet Accessibility Index has just been published by comparison site Broadband Choices, which ranks 169 countries and territories on the quality of their broadband and mobile infrastructure to find the world’s most connected countries. Interestingly the United Kingdom managed to place 6th overall.

The winners of the annual Uswitch.com Awards 2021 have today been unveiled, which among other categories saw UK ISP Plusnet scoop the win for “Broadband Provider of the Year“, while Virgin Media once again grabbed the “Fastest Broadband Provider” crown and BT were named best “TV Provider of the Year.” Read on for the full list.

The North Yorkshire County Council is reportedly preparing to start a new scheme worth £3m, which among other things will rollout a free public WiFi network across 16 of the county’s “rural” market towns – stretching from Scarborough to Skipton. Ultrafast full fibre broadband will also be deployed to 6 rural business parks.

Network builder and ISP Vorboss, which some time ago spoke of plans to deploy their own business “full fibre” broadband network to 250,000 premises in large UK urban areas by the end of 2022 (here), has been acquired by Fern Trading Limited (Fern Fibre Limited) for an as yet undisclosed sum.

A new OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by rural full fibre ISP Truespeed, has found that 67% of parents say they need “fast broadband” because they work from home, but only 36% claim to have a “highly reliable” home connection and 46% say they suffer “broadband problems” at least once a week.

UK ISP Swish Fibre, which is working to deploy a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 250,000 premises in the Home Counties, has signed an agreement with civil engineering firm MGM Utilities that will see them extend into Gerrards Cross and Bourne End (South Buckinghamshire).
