Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve kicked off the construction phase for several of their recently awarded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts with the government (BDUK), including in remote rural parts of Lancashire, Wales, Devon, Hertfordshire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire.

Researchers from Kai Security have identified eighteen extensions (add-ons) for Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Edge website browsers, some of which are both well rated and widely installed, that have been stealthily used to hide a Trojan infection that can hijack your browser and steal personal data. Worse is that 2.3 million users have installed one of them.

Customers of Sky Broadband’s “superfast” (part-fibre) packages (FTTC or SOGEA), specifically those living in areas where Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines now exist from either Openreach or CityFibre’s networks, have started to receive Texts (SMS) and WhatsApp messages inviting them to upgrade to their Full Fibre 100Mbps (18Mbps upload) service “at no extra charge“.

Infracapital-backed UK ISP Ogi, which is rolling out a 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across South Wales (110,000 RFS premises passed by end of 2024), has today announced that they’ve released another batch of grants – worth around £5,000 – as part of their “Cefnogi” community support fund for local projects.

Customers of broadband and phone provider Virgin Media (O2), specifically those who take their pay TV service and continue to use one of the provider’s legacy TiVo set-top-boxes, have recently been informed – via email – that the BBC’s popular iPlayer service “will no longer be supported” from 23rd July 2025. But it’s not all bad news.

Hull-based incumbent broadband provider KCOM, which has built a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across large parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England, has named three more winners for their Digital Inclusion Grants – worth a combined £20k. A total of £100,000 has so far been paid out to related projects since the scheme started.

Wildanet Engineer's Hand Connecting FTTP Lines

Alternative UK network provider Wildanet has announced that they’ve now built their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband service to an additional 10,000 premises in rural Cornwall. The effort forms part of the three contracts they hold with the government’s wider £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which are worth £77m (state aid).

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Neos Networks have today confirmed the completion of their £7.25m “GigaHubs” project, which has now connected 192 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.) to a new 1,500km long gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, has published their Q1-Q2 2025 (H1) study into the speed of 5G based mobile broadband networks across the United Kingdom. The results reveal that Three UK continues to hold the top spot, followed by merger partner Vodafone.

Internet provider Sky Broadband has today gone fully live via CityFibre’s growing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband network. The change is being launched alongside a new Wi-Fi 7 router – “Gigafast+ Hub” (SCER11BELUKS) – and two new packages – Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ (2.5Gbps) and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ (5Gbps).

Network testing firm Ookla has released an updated version of their popular broadband performance testing Speedtest.net app (Android and iOS), which further improves integration with their popular internet outage monitoring service (Downdetector) and adds new Experience Ratings to their speed tester.

New research from network testing firm Ookla, which operates the popular online Speedtest.net service for broadband users, has revealed that London Heathrow (LHR) in the UK ranks poorly for mobile broadband (4G/5G) and WiFi performance when compared with 48 major airports worldwide.

Irish network operator Eir is taking BT (Openreach) to the High Court in London over a claim for damages worth £67m, which relates to a long-running dispute over the UK broadband giant’s Northern Ireland Public Sector Shared Network (NIPSSN) contract to provide connectivity services; the same one that attracted a £6.3m fine from Ofcom in 2020.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they will make it quicker for consumers to access Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) providers, which are third-party ombudsman schemes that help people to resolve complaints with their phone, broadband and mobile providers.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their second biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for 2025 (July), which reveals that only one mobile and broadband (telecoms) provider made it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations – Tesco Mobile (9th). But both Virgin Media and Utility Warehouse saw a big improvement.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), which is a trade body representing ISPs and related comms providers, has today published the results of a new nationally representative poll. This found that 72% of people believe it’s important for broadband providers to keep upgrading networks and 62% were willing to accept short-term traffic disruption for long-term improvements.

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has today published the results of a new study that examined the United Kingdom’s experience and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks. But sadly, it discovers that a “significant gap” remains between aspiration and reality for customers.
