Internet, mobile and phone provider Vodafone UK appears to have quietly introduced a new range of fixed line “Pro 3 Broadband” packages, which feature their “all new” Ultra Hub 7 Fibre router and Super WiFi 7 Booster. The headline change here is reflected in the fact that this kit supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 networking standard for faster speeds.

Edinburgh-based alternative network and UK ISP GoFibre, which has been building their new full fibre (FTTP) gigabit broadband network across rural parts of Scotland and Northern England, have confirmed that their deployment in the Scottish town of Montrose has connected its 1,000th customer.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today introduced Screen Damage Insurance, which costs “from” as little as £2 per month and enables new and existing customers to “protect one of the most important parts of their phone” with manufacturer approved parts and flexible repair options.

Mobile operator Three UK has notified the remaining customers still on their old Relish Wireless (Three Broadband) service in Swindon (Wiltshire, England), which was originally acquired from UK Broadband Limited in 2017 (here), that it is finally due to be retired by the end of May 2025. But the news came as a surprise to some users.

The TalkTalk Group has confirmed to ISPreview that some 95,000 customers of ISP Origin Broadband, which is a trading name for Origin Communications and OB Telecom (owned by TalkTalk), are being transferred to Utility Warehouse (UW / Telecom Plus) as part of a recently agreed partnership.

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is the virtual network provider (MVNO) sibling of Vodafone, has launched a new promotion that offers their entry-level £10 per month SIM-Only plan with 80GB (GigaBytes) of mobile broadband data (usually 20GB), as well as unlimited access to social media, calls, text and picture messages.

Ofcom has today published its Spring 2025 update on UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) lines now reach 74% of homes (up from 69% in July 2024), while 86% are within reach of a gigabit network (up from 83%) and 62-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal (up from 61-79%).

Alternative network builder and ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has informed ISPreview that their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is to be rolled out in the East Staffordshire market town of Burton upon Trent. The first works are due to get underway this month.

Rochdale-base UK ISP Zen Internet has today officially launched The Fibre Hub, which essentially aggregates access to a number of major and smaller alternative full fibre broadband networks (Openreach, CityFibre, Trooli, Freedom Fibre etc.) and offers that up to partners (e.g. other ISPs) at the wholesale level.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual Media Use and Attitudes 2025 report, which among other things has revealed that the proportion of UK adults with home internet access remains plateaued at 94% in 2024. But the majority of adults without internet access at home report a lack of interest in having it.

A relatively new Liverpool-based alternative network operator called River City Networks, which was incorporated on 30th May 2023 and has one Director (Matthew Wilson), has revealed that it plans to deploy a new “gigabit dual fibre and wireless” network to serve premises in several UK cities, specifically in Liverpool, Manchester and London.

The Broadband Forum has begun interoperability testing for the next generation of 50Gbps and 25Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable fibre optic broadband technologies, 50G-PON and 25GS-PON. Participating companies included Adtran, Broadcom, Calix, CIG, Cortina Access, Gemtek, Lambda Networks, MT2, Nokia, Sagemcom, and Vantiva.

New research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 0.91% or 13.5 million in Q4 2024 (down from 1.44% in Q3 2024) to total 1.5 billion connections. The subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks also remained strong in the UK at 11.7%, putting us just two places behind the leading countries for growth.
