Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s (O2) Pay TV services (delivered via their TV 360, V6 or Stream boxes) have today been informed that the provider has launched ‘Premier Sports Rugby’ on their platform, which is said to be the “UK’s first dedicated 24/7 rugby channel“. But you’ll need to be subscribed to Premier Sports in order to get it.

Ofcom Propose to Authorise Satellites to Deliver UK 4G and 5G Mobile

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today done as expected by proposing for the UK to become the “first country in Europe” to authorise Direct to Device (D2D) satellite services for use in regular mobile bands, which could be used to help mobile operators improve their 4G and 5G coverage.

The ISPA and INCA have today published new ‘Best Practice Guidance’ for gigabit broadband operators that are building new poles as part of their UK network expansions. The guidance aims to support the Government’s goal of “ending the deployment of unnecessary telegraph poles” (here), not least by requiring providers to engage more closely with communities before they build.

Network operator CityFibre has this morning announced their second recent acquisition of an alternative UK broadband provider, which will see them gobble Connexin’s growing 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in parts of East Yorkshire (Hull etc.), Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire (England). The financial details of the deal are not yet known.

Welsh Government to Reopen ABC Broadband Vouchers this Spring

The Welsh Government (WG) has revealed that their Access Broadband Cymru (ABC) grant scheme is to “reopen” this spring 2025, albeit with some changes. Gov Commit £45m for Better Internet Connectivity in Around 1,000 UK Schools

The UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE) has today committed to invest £45 million into improving internet connectivity and further plans to make digital standards a requirement for all schools across the country, which includes fibre broadband upgrades for 833 schools. BT UK to Shut Older Contact Centres in Leeds and Exeter

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has confirmed to ISPreview that, as part of their ongoing UK programme to modernise and consolidate the number of offices they have, they’ve decided to close their Contact Centres in Leeds and Exeter over the “coming months“. The move is expected to impact hundreds of jobs, but many will be consolidated into more modern sites.
