The drip feeding of roll-out information from the £40m Better Broadband for Suffolk project reveals that more than 2,100 homes and businesses in Southwold and Reydon can now access BT’s “high speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network after 7 local street cabinets (serving 174 postcodes) were upgraded.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has added another 116 engineers as part of their on-going apprenticeship scheme and more are expected to follow. The new recruits are apparently needed to “help meet the demand for superfast broadband and digital services” in homes across the United Kingdom.

The £14m Broadband East Riding Project, which aims to make BT’s superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to a further 42,734 local premises by December 2015, has announced its first roll-out locations for late April 2014 onwards.

Thankfully Google’s popular Chrome website browser now has the capability to compress website pages just like the Turbo Mode of its rival Opera.

Existing customers of EE’s mobile network, including T-Mobile and Orange UK subscribers, can now take their fixed line unlimited Home Broadband (up to 17Mbps) and free calls package from just £2 per month for the first 12 months (plus line rental from £11 pre-paid or £15.40 monthly).

Telecoms operator EE has released its latest Q4-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base added +12k new customers in the quarter to total 726,000 (up from +10k added in Q3), while their 4G based Mobile Broadband users went from 1.2m in Q3 to 1.996m now.

The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the widespread adoption of true Fibre-to-the-Home (100Mbps+) broadband ISP connections, has published its latest annual table of global FTTH coverage and revealed that growth in the United Kingdom has slowed and continues to offer less than 1% penetration (234k premises passed at 10.3% uptake).

The communications regulator has assessed the impact for both licensed and licence-exempt uses of the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands and found that the risk of interference with other services, such as WiFi (adjacent 2.4GHz band), did exist but wasn’t big enough to be worth worrying about.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has extended the reach of its “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network to 14 more towns (total 174 towns and cities) and 18 of the UK’s largest airports, which means their service now covers 70% of the population. Commuters on key rail and road routes will also benefit.
