Thousands of additional homes in Surrey and West Sussex (England) look set to benefit after UK ISP Box Broadband confirmed that they had secured significant new investment from high net worth individuals, which will enable them to expand their unlimited 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) will today publish the outcome of their inquiry into the rural challenges of gaining access to superfast broadband, 4G mobile networks and accessing digital-only services across the United Kingdom, which identifies a number of problems with the Government’s strategy.

Ofcom has published a Summer 2019 update to their Connected Nations report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) UK broadband coverage has risen to 8% (up from 7% four months ago) and the number of premises unable to get 10Mbps+ has declined from 619,000 to 578,000. Geographic 4G mobile cover remains at 66%.

Cable and fibre optic broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has continued the rollout of their planned 10:1 ratio boost to upload speeds by raising the upstream rate from 6Mbps to 10Mbps on their popular M100 (100Mbps download) package, with 50Mbps (M50) subscribers also benefiting.

The Brenig Wind Farm – Llyn Brenig – in Denbighshire (North Wales, UK) has begun to accept bids for a new community benefit fund, which will offer £147,200 per annum in total for up to 25 years to help support community projects for improved rural transport, social services and faster broadband connectivity etc.

Mobile operator O2 UK and Samsung have announced that their latest trial of ultrafast mobile broadband connectivity will involve equipping a standard ambulance with simulated 5G connectivity, which they say could transform such emergency vehicles into a unique remote consultation room.

The Monmouthshire County Council in Wales has posted a new contract notice, which proposes to help fund a new 30Mbps+ capable superfast broadband ISP network that would serve around 480 premises in rural parts of the county (focusing on areas around the towns of Abergavenny, Pontypool and Usk – north of Newport).

Anybody using the popular Google Chrome website browser, which since 10th September has been updated to its latest v77 release, should take note that if you own a Netgear and some other broadband routers then due to a bug you may be unable to login via the device’s web-based admin page (192.168.1.1).

The Welsh Government (WG) has quietly made a small but important change to LOT 1 (North West Wales) of their £22.5m Phase 2 “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) roll-out contract with BT (Openreach), which so far as we can tell appears to replace the hybrid fibre FTTC deployment areas with ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP.

The Offa Community Council in Wrexham (Wales) is to lodge a complaint with the main town council after local residents in several areas complained about Virgin Media’s “terrible” street works, which had been left like a “snails tail” and some driveways were inaccessible for over a week.

The fallout from last year’s troubled migration to a new billing platform has continued after broadband ISP Plusnet confirmed that, in yet another blunder, their system failed to take payments from hundreds of customers for a period of several months. As a result some subscribers are about to be hit with a large backdated bill.

Several industry sources have indicated to ISPreview.co.uk that they now expect the Government to water down Boris Johnson’s (Prime Minister) pledge to cover the United Kingdom in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2025, which will instead be replaced by “gigabit” or “gigafast” terminology (i.e. delivery by more than just full fibre).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today established a new Cymru Wales Board, whose members include engineers and support staff from across the country. Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has today updated their early real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 12 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service), which reveals that the United Kingdom remains the slowest of the early adopter countries (599Mbps UK vs 1815Mbps USA).

After Three UK led the way, followed by Vodafone, then EE and today mobile operator O2 has become the last of the major UK providers to launch its own “Unlimited Data” (mobile broadband) tariffs for 4G and future 5G customers, which are available on both their Custom Plans and SIM-only contracts from £33 a month.
