Ofcom set out KCOM changes to boost competition and broadband in Hull UK

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today set out their final decisions for how they intend to regulate the fixed telecoms markets that underpin gigabit broadband, mobile networks and business connections in the Hull Area of East Yorkshire (England) – reflecting c.198,000 premises, which remains dominated by KCOM’s local network.

Copper cable thieves strike Essex town and disrupt Openreach’s broadband

More than 2,000 metres of Openreach’s older copper broadband and phone cable has been stolen from around the Essex (England) town of South Woodham Ferrers, which is home to a population of c.16,000. The criminal activity is understood to have caused “significant disruption” to local telecoms services for homes and businesses.

APFN offer cashback to UK partners on CityFibre’s broadband and Ethernet network

The AllPoints Fibre Network (APFN), which is a Fern Trading backed wholesale platform that aggregates connectivity from several different UK networks including their own, has begun offering their UK ISP partners £500 cashback on Ethernet and £100 on full fibre broadband (FTTP) via CityFibre’s national network.

Internet provider BT has published their biannual (October 2026) progress update on the delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat limited 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 9,452 premises (up from 9,089 in Apr 2026) – using FTTP, with 128 further builds in-progress (down from 461).

Culture Secretary pushes for statutory UK broadband supplier of last resort

The UK Government’s Secretary of State for Digital and Culture (DCMS), Lisa Nandy MP, has pushed for the Enterprise Act 2002 to be updated to add a statutory Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process for telecoms providers (broadband and mobile). The move follows Nandy’s 11th hour intervention to wave through TalkTalk’s controversial sale to BT via a public interest exemption.

Ofcom has released their latest Q2 2026 study of quarterly UK consumer telecoms and TV complaints, which reveals that TalkTalk, Vodafone, EE and BT all tied by attracting the most complaints from customers about fixed broadband services, while Sky Mobile came top of the naughty table for Pay Monthly Mobile services and EE did the same for Pay TV.

O2 UK trial Nokia’s AI-powered radio access network to boost 5G mobile network UPDATE

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that they’ve just completed the UK’s “first live deployment” of Nokia’s AI-powered Radio Access Network (RAN) tech at their Giga Site in London Paddington. The trial is said to have improved the network’s spectral efficiency by 20% and allowed their 5G+ (Standalone) site to carry more mobile data (mobile broadband) traffic.

EE come top in Streetwave study of Cornwall UK’s mobile broadband performance

Network analyst firm Streetwave has published the results from their recent survey of mobile network coverage and data (4G, 5G) performance across Cornwall in England, which tracked the capabilities of EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) across more than 5,000km of the county’s roads between 27th July and 7th October 2026.
