The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project faced heavy criticism yesterday after UK Government MPs in the House of Commons highlighted on-going delays in awarding the new Phase 2 rollout contract(s), which aim to extend “superfast broadband” into more rural areas. But Christmas may bring a resolution.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media will today switch-on their new DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrade for “hundreds of thousands of homes” in Cardiff and across South Wales, which means that well over 7 million UK homes can now access their top Gig1 service (1104Mbps download and 52Mbps upload).

A new report has used data from 398,973 consumer speedtests to identify the top 10 fastest and slowest UK streets for broadband ISP download speed, which finds that Queens Road in Weybridge (Surrey) was the “slowest” on 0.12Mbps and Dale Lane in Appleton (Cheshire) is the fastest at 639.67Mbps. But there are caveats.

A new study by WIK, which was commissioned by the FTTH Council Europe, has found that consumers are still being confused by the use (or abuse) of the term “fibre” in broadband ISP advertising, which can just as easily refer to slower hybrid connections (e.g. FTTC using copper and fibre lines) as it can a “full fibre” (FTTP) service.

Cityfibre has announced that their plan to rollout a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the large UK town of Reading (Berkshire), the city of Gloucester (Gloucestershire) and Plymouth (Devon), costing £58m, £31m and £52m respectively, is due to begin in January 2021.

A new joint study between Telefonica (e.g. O2 UK) and telecoms kit maker Nokia, which focused on the power consumption of the RAN (Radio Access Network), has claimed that the latest generation of ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) networks are up to 90% more energy efficient “per traffic unit” than existing 4G ones.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has confirmed that they’ve “reluctantly” begun a high court case against budget broadband ISP TalkTalk, which reportedly centres on a dispute over unpaid fees (said to be worth c.£16m) for wholesale access to its high-speed fibre optic based Ethernet products.

The Welsh Government has issued a Q3 2020 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 39,000 extra premises in rural Wales. The data to September 2020 shows 14,698 premises have now been completed.

As expected Openreach (BT) have today confirmed that the cathedral city of Salisbury in Wiltshire has just become the first location in the UK where the operator has stopped selling copper based broadband ISP and phone services, which means that new orders or upgrades on their network can now only be provisioned with FTTP.

Openreach (BT) has generated a furious response from alternative UK broadband networks (AltNets) after they introduced a new fee on certain FTTP linked connections, which broadband ISPs have described as being “punitive” and a “blatant attempt by [the operator] to regain a monopoly” that is likely to “slow the rollout of full fibre.”

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has announced that they’ve begun work to build their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the large West Sussex (England) town of Crawley, which is being supported by a private investment of “at least” £23 million.

Last month saw Vodafone UK offer free Data SIMs, packed with a 30GB (GigaByte) allowance (valid for 90 days), to help 250,000 primary and secondary school children to stay connected with their education this winter. The scheme was so successful that it’s now being extended to reach another 100,000 children and young people.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that their 5G based (mobile broadband) network has now started to go live across busy parts of some 154 UK towns and cities (via a total of 800 cell sites and masts), which also includes the launch of their first Ericsson powered 5G sites in Manchester, Glasgow and Reading.
