Worcestershire-based UK broadband ISP Airband, which has spent the past few years deploying a number of fixed wireless and “full fibre” (FTTP) networks to rural areas, has today revealed that Aberdeen Standard Investments (ASI) has acquired a majority stake in the company and plans a major fibre deployment.

In another telecoms policy surprise the UK Government has today announced that mobile operators, such as Three UK, EE (BT) and Vodafone, must stop installing “any” Huawei equipment in ultrafast 5G networks from the end of September 2021. A 35% cap on kit will also apply to FTTP and gigabit broadband from Jan 2023.

Budget UK phone and broadband ISP TalkTalk has reportedly approached Sky Broadband and Vodafone about the possibility of combining forces in a legal challenge to halt a key change in Ofcom’s Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which could result in Openreach (BT) charging higher wholesale prices.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has maintained its threat of strike action against broadband and mobile giant BT after the operator concluded their consultation on changes to redundancy terms, which among other things will see the operator slash redundancy payments in half (from 24 months to 12).

Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has just published the results of a new study, which examined the effect of network congestion on 4G and the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband networks from EE (BT), Vodafone, O2 and Three UK. Sadly Three suffered the most and slowed by over 36% during peak hours, on average.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV) has today become the latest media and broadband operator to start transitioning their fleet of engineer vehicles to more energy efficient ones, which in this case means the adoption of 151 Ford Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vans (PHEVs) rather than full EVs.

A new study from the Prysmian Group, which was commissioned by cable manufacturer Europacable, has found that Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks are the most energy efficient of consumer fixed line technologies, compared with FTTC (VDSL2) and Hybrid Fibre Coax (DOCSIS 3 networks, like Virgin Media).

UK ISP Pulse8 Broadband has reduced some of their monthly prices and, unlike other providers at this time of year, these reflect changes to their standard pricing (i.e. not temporary discounts). The main change is on their FTTC based plans, although they also offer FTTP and G.fast via Openreach’s network.

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has today published his 2020 Spending Review and in so doing has kicked off the new £5bn UK Gigabit Broadband Programme, which previously aimed to ensure that “every home” could access a 1Gbps capable connection by the end of 2025 but now expects a “minimum” of 85% coverage by that date.

A new study by Global Wireless Solutions (GWS), which was conducted by Censuswide with 2,007 UK adults during September to early November 2020, has determined that only 64% of properties have a “decent broadband” (10Mbps+) service and a third (30%) are suffering from “inadequate throughputs” (i.e. sub-2Mbps speeds).

At some point in the near future Amazon plans to introduce a new feature to their smart devices (Echo, Echo Show, Ring etc.) called ‘Sidewalk‘, which by default will create a new wireless network – this has access to both your broadband ISP connection and that of your neighbour’s (if they have similar kit) – to improve connectivity.

A number of UK Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) on BT’s (EE) national UK mobile network, such as the mobile solutions offered by broadband providers like Plusnet and The Phone Co-op, may soon gain access to modern features (ultrafast 5G etc.) as a result of an expanded deal with Transatel (NTT Group).

Rural broadband builder Broadway Partners (aka – UK ISP Broadway Broadband) appears to have extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) rollout in Wales to include rural communities in parts of Powys, starting with the small villages of Llanafan Fawr (population of 470+) and Llanwrthwl (population of 190+).
