Virgin Media UK Opens New Multi-Million Pound HQ in Reading

As expected cable broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has today opened a brand new 120,000 square feet HQ building in the large town of Reading (Green Park), which will play host to nearly 1,500 staff; the first ones are moving into the site this week.

Nevertheless they’ve now launched a new “Extra” tier that adds an Apple 4K TV (IPTV) set-top-box and a 1 year Apple TV+ subscription.

KCOM Win 2019 European Broadband Award for Network Quality

The incumbent broadband ISP for Hull and East Yorkshire (England), KCOM, last night scooped the 2019 European Broadband Award for “Quality and affordability of services,” which predominantly reflected their £85m effort to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across their patch.

Three UK Prepares to Trial eSIM Support on Mobile Network

Three UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the long wait for eSIM support on their 3G, 4G and 5G network may finally be coming to an end. The mobile operator plans to launch customer trials “within the next few months.” Rivals O2, EE (BT) and Vodafone have already launched eSIM, albeit with varying different levels of support.

TVWS Broadband Reaches 100 Rural Premises in Trossachs

A public investment of £50,000 by the Stirling Council in Scotland has enabled 72 homes and 30 businesses in the remote rural Trossachs community of Brig o’ Turk to access broadband speeds of 50Mbps+ via a new fixed wireless network, which harnesses TV White Space (TVWS) tech from UK ISP Broadway Broadband (Broadway Partners).

Business ISP Commsworld Plan Full Fibre Network in Newcastle

SaT5G Project Finally Demonstrates 5G Data over Satellite

Back in 2017 the Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, supported by 16 operators like BT, Avanti, SES and €8.3m via the EU’s Horizon 2020 5G Research & Innovation contract, began work to integrate Satellite and future 5G Mobile networks. The project has now completed “several successful demonstrations” of the network.

Wales Considers Spending More on Mobile than Fixed Broadband

The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has issued a call for evidence on its priorities for 2020 as it develops a future infrastructure plan for Wales, which among other things includes a proposal to spend a “greater proportion of public funds” on mobile (4G / 5G) rather than to fixed broadband ISP networks.
