Last week we reported that alternative network ISP Internetty was preparing to deploy a new Gigabit-capable (1Gbps+) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and fixed wireless network to serve UK “rural and semi-urbanised areas.” We now have some details of their rollout plan for Lincolnshire and Staffordshire.

The Milton Keynes Council in Buckinghamshire has reached a new agreement with UK ISP Hyperoptic, which will see their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / B) broadband network being rolled out to cover 4,500 social housing properties in the town. The work is “due to start imminently.”

A new YouGov survey of 4,100 UK people, which was commissioned by UK ISP TalkTalk, has claimed that for 50% of respondents access to “reliable broadband” is more important than their partner and 7 in 10 would even prioritise it over their family pet (this may depend what they mean – in the practical sense – by “prioritise“).

A new uSwitch.com commissioned Opinium survey of 2,010 UK adults (conducted during July 2019), which has been complemented by data from Opensignal, claims that 23 million consumers (45%) still struggle to connect to 4G, while 5G “looks unlikely” to fix this since it will only be available to 28% of the country by the end of 2019.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has, in somewhat of an “industry first,” agreed to help extend Mobile Broadband coverage by sharing some of its “unused” 4G radio spectrum with StrattoOpencell (part of the Digital Colony UK Infrastructure Platform) in order to offer high-speed data in “remote areas without fibre connectivity.”

As many as 350,000 UK homes and businesses across Dorset, Devon and Somerset in England could potentially gain access to a new Gigabit-capable (1Gbps) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after new ISP Jurassic Fibre (a play on the local “Jurassic Coast” shoreline) formally launched in Exeter yesterday.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has today unveiled the next quarterly batch of 29 new UK rollout locations (total of 103 so far) for their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which aims to cover 4 million premises (homes and businesses) by March 2021 and then 15 million by around 2025.

As expected Ofcom has today introduced a cap on the wholesale cost of calls to 070 numbers, which can in some cases attract consumer charges of between 45p and £1.10 per minute but will now be aligned with the existing cap set by the regulator for calls to mobile numbers (currently around 0.5p per minute).

The Monmouthshire County Council in Wales has today confirmed that the £155k rollout contract for a new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network, which aims to cover around 480 premises in remote rural areas, has been awarded to UK Fixed Wireless Access ISP Broadway Partners (Broadway Broadband).

Alternative full fibre UK broadband ISP Trooli (CallFlow), which is supported by €30m from European investors (here) and aims to cover 500,000 premises across the South East of England by the end of 2024, has grown their network coverage to 10,000 premises and been awarded Path to Collaboration (PTC) by Openreach (BT).

The trouble prone Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project, which recently took the decision to end their Phase 2 contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear due to significant roll-out delays (here), has confirmed that they don’t expect to sign a new supplier contract until around November 2020.

Credible sources have revealed to ISPreview.co.uk that ISP Virgin Media’s new DOCSIS 3.1 powered 1Gbps broadband package, which is due to go live in Southampton first before becoming available to all 15 million of their UK premises by 2021 (here), is expected to cost from £62 per month standalone. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, is this week expected to commit £5bn of public funding in order to support his seemingly now watered down ambition to have “Gigabit broadband sprouting in every home” by the end of 2025 (full fibre, cable broadband, 5G etc.).

A new study from Is My Bill Fair has resulted in the organisation claiming that existing customers of major broadband ISPs – including EE, BT, Virgin Media Plusnet, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband – are being “overcharged” between £91.20 and up to £235.56 per year as a result of the so-called “loyalty penalty.”

As first promised last year, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has finally reached a new standardised wayleaves (land or property access) agreement, which aims to make the process of deploying new rooftop base stations (cell sites) for UK mobile network operators both easier and faster so as to improve 4G and 5G coverage.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve started the construction phase of their new £40m project to rollout a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the East Midlands (England) town of Northampton, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone.
