A new analysis of broadband coverage in the UK has indicated that 77.8% of new build homes constructed across the whole of 2019 so far were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 70.5% in 2018), which rises to 94% for “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage (up from 93% last year).

The UK communications and media (broadband, mobile, TV etc.) regulator has today set out a range of new measures that are intended to tackle bundles of both mobile handsets and tariffs (airtime contracts) together, which often continue to charge consumers for the handset even once the minimum contract term has ended.

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has confirmed that Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service is now live on their Ultra HD (4K) Virgin TV V6 set-top-box (i.e. it’s today been automatically downloaded). As usual you’ll still need a subscription to Prime (from £5.99 per month) to watch the content itself.

Business broadband ISP Onecom, which only recently secured a five-year funding deal worth £30 million from HSBC UK (here), has now managed to attract a £100m funding package from LDC and Ares Management Corporation to accelerate their “organic and inorganic growth ambitions.”

Over the past few months we’ve had a number of emails from people in rural parts of Hampshire that have been overlooked by the state aid supported Hampshire Superfast Broadband project. All wanted to know how the council, which has been fairly quiet on the subject since 2017, planned to tackle the final 2-3% of premises.

Cable TV and broadband operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) is reported to be examining the possibility of creating a new company in the UK, which could compete with Openreach (BT) in rural areas by building its own Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (open access for other ISPs to harness).

A few years ago Sky Broadband became the first ISP to stop accepting orders from UK customers on lines – often rural ones – where speeds were stuck below 2Mbps (here). Sadly more providers appear to have joined this club of shunning those on slower lines, which for some may exasperate the feeling of digital exclusion.

Telecoms giant BT has extended their existing relationship with network technology company Cisco by adopting their Network Convergence System (NCS) 5500 series routers, which forms part of the broadband ISPs work to upgrade their internet peering platform.

The Voluntary Copyright Alert Program (VCAP), which has so far seen broadband ISPs in the UK send around 1 million “educational” internet piracy warning emails (“subscriber alerts“) to consumers they suspect of taking part in copyright infringement, has been ceased because it “served [its] purpose.”

After several trials Transport for London (TfL) has today announced that they will make 4G mobile (mobile broadband) services available across the whole of their London Underground (tube trains) network by the “mid-2020s“, starting with the eastern half of the Jubilee line from March 2020 (tunnels and stations).

Mobile operator O2 has invested £32 million to upgrade their existing 4G network capacity at just under 400 UK tourist hotspots for the summer holidays. Some of the locations to benefit from this include the Abbey Road crossing, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and the Angel of the North.

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has begun consulting on its plan to implement the new European Electronic Communications Code (EECC) into UK law, which includes new provisions that are intended to boost the rollout of Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and 5G mobile networks.

Cityfibre has today confirmed the next 14 UK cities and towns (only three are new additions) to benefit from Phase Two their £2.5bn rollout of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network, which is being supported by residential ISP partner Vodafone and aims to cover 5 million premises by 2025.

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has signed telecoms builder Avonline Networks (M Group Services), which will support the rollout of their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based RFoG / DOCSIS network to 70,000 extra premises across the South West of England, Wales and North East England.

Ofcom has today opened a new investigation to examine whether BT has complied with its charging obligations, which occurred after the UK operator indicated to the regulator that it may not have correctly billed for Excess Construction Charges (ECCs) when providing new business lines (Ethernet services etc.).

Too much choice can be confusing. EY‘s annual digital home survey of 2,500 UK consumers found that 46% of households believe there is too much choice in the broadband ISP and content market (up from 43% in 2017). Plus the various discounts on offer don’t make it any easier to choose.
