Brief Internet and phone outages can be annoying but spare a thought for ten homes in a rural Fife (Scotland) village, near St Michaels Inn, where a BT cable fault has left locals without a working broadband and phone service since 22nd November last year.

The state aid supported £31.75m Superfast Dorset project in southern England has today announced the first areas that can expect to benefit from an upgrade to BT’s fibre optic based (FTTC/P) broadband network, which aims to cover 97% of the county by late 2016 (note: 95% will get superfast speeds of 25Mbps+).

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has confirmed that the operator is already conducting trials of 4K video streaming (Ultra HDTV – 3840 x 2160 pixels) technology for its BT TV and sport content. But you’ll need a good broadband connection to benefit.

Consumer Futures (formerly Consumer Focus), which is a Non-Departmental Public Body that was setup to act as a national consumer council, has joined with Which?, TalkTalk and Three UK to warn the UK Government that big telecoms and broadband ISPs are harming pro-consumer measures by tying the regulator up with long and costly legal challenges.

The national telecoms operator has rebuffed claims made by business Internet provider Timico, which earlier this week estimated that 10% of companies in the United Kingdom could face the “worst case scenario” of being completely “cut off” from their broadband services as BT withdraws its old 20CN platform.

It’s well known that Satellite ISPs can place strict Traffic Management style measures on their Internet access services and now the Advertising Standards Authority has stepped in to stop one provider, Avonline Broadband, from promoting the products alongside “UNLIMITED” usage claims on their website. Other providers take heed.

Budget communications provider TalkTalk has seen its strongest quarterly growth in broadband subscribers yet, fuelled by additions from their new deal with the Post Office, after the operator added +110,000 customers during Q4 2013 (calendar) to reach a total of 4,186,000 (up from just +5k added in Q3 2013).

National UK cable provider Virgin Media has acquired Lancashire-based rival Smallworld Fibre, which typically served homes in western Scotland and North West England, for an undisclosed amount and in the process added 40,000 new customers.

A question mark has been left hanging over the South Hams Broadband project, which aims to roll-out a 100Mbps+ Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network across the parishes of Thurlestone, South Milton and South Huish, after Devon County Council refused to give locals a vote between adopting that and BT’s slower FTTC network.

The latest monthly UK consumer Internet speed testing data for January 2014 has revealed that the average broadband download speed for the largest six ISPs in the country has slipped to 17.146Mbps (18.376Mbps in Dec 2013), while the average upload rate also dropped to 3.098Mbps (3.320Mbps in Dec 2013).

The £15.47m CSW Broadband project, which aims to roll-out BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 92% of Coventry, 96% of Solihull and 91% of Warwickshire in England (overall 91% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) by spring 2016, has today revealed which communities will be the first to benefit. Postcode level coverage data is also expected to follow.

Mobile operators EE (T-Mobile and Orange UK) and Three UK have agreed to expand their 50/50 network sharing deal, through the umbrella organisation called Mobile-Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), with an extra investment of £1 billion to improve 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage and cut costs.

The Scottish Government’s “Cyber Integrator” (cybercrime tzar), Keith McDevitt, has warned home owners to close their open wifi networks (wireless) after finding that an increasing number of cyber criminals, such as Internet paedophiles, were using them to commit offences that ISPs often trace back to innocent broadband users.
