FRITZ!Box 7490 Broadband VDSL and ADSL Router Adds Gigabit WiFi

Germany-based networking kit manufacturer AVM, which are best known for their series of advanced and absurdly feature rich FRITZ!Box broadband ISP routers, has improved upon their existing line-up by launching the FRITZ!Box 7490. The major change over their previous 7390 is the addition of 1.3Gbps capable 802.11ac WiFi technology.

Customers of Virgin Media’s (Liberty Global) national UK cable network can expect to start receiving a significant broadband download speed boost, at no extra cost, when the operator this month begins rolling out its latest network upgrades and pushes their top package speeds up to 152Mbps (Megabits per second).

South Gloucestershire UK “village of the future” Suffers from Slow Broadband

Residents of Aurora Springs, a new homes development in South Gloucestershire (England) that forms part of the wider Cheswick “Urban Village Concept” near Bristol, have complained to BT and the city council because their “village of the future” suffers from slow broadband access and some even have no access to a phone service.

UK ISP BT Tops 1.9m Retail FTTC Users as Broadband Customers Hit 7.11 Million

The retail division of BT has ended 2013 with a total fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base of 7,111,000 and that represents a stable growth of +150k in Q4 2013 (down slightly from +156k in Q3). The figure includes 1.9 Million superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +228k in Q4 vs +195k added in Q3).

It’s been a difficult few months for BSkyB (Sky Broadband) but the operators latest Q4 2013 results have revealed that their broadband ISP subscriber base continued to grow by +110,000 in Q4 to total 5,127,000 (stable from +111k added in Q3). Churn also fell and ARPU grew but their unbundled (LLU) network expansion stopped.

One of the UK Government’s strongest advocates of mandatory network-level Internet filtering, MP Claire Perry, has told a Westminster eForum that modern ISP censorship systems are “far better, far stronger, much more effective and will not overblock” websites (i.e. wrongful blocking). The state aid supported £35.44 million e-Sussex project, which will make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) speeds available to 96% of East Sussex premises in England by mid-2016 (note: 99% will be covered by BT’s new FTTC/P network but some won’t be “superfast“), has revealed the next communities to benefit from its upgrade work.

National Broadband Delivery UK Scheme Passes 273,731 with BT Fibre

BT Openreach Hike the Price of Already Expensive 330Mbps Fibre on Demand

In a surprise move BTOpenreach has advised us that its FTTP on Demand (FoD) product, which makes their “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) fibre optic broadband ISP technology available to premises on FTTC capable lines, is now going to become even more expensive due to higher than expected deployment costs.
