The government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has today published a new document that outlines the three wireless connectivity options available for cities taking part in the troubled, state-aid supported £150m Super Connected Cities Programme (SCCP).

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today officially allowed Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in the United Kingdom to repurpose their existing radio spectrum (specifically 900MHz, 2100MHz and 1800MHz) for use by the new generation of superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services.

The government of Scotland has today signed a state aid supported £264 million deal with BT that will make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to 85% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015 and around 95% by the end of 2017. As before we don’t know what proportion of those will get “superfast” (25Mbps+) speeds.

Alcatel-Lucent has posted some tantalising details from its recent trial of future G.Fast and prototype Vectoring 2.0 technology at Telekom Austria, which could one day push today’s up to 80Mbps capable FTTC (VDSL2) broadband ISP lines to deliver speeds of up to 1100Mbps (1.1Gbps).

Netflix UK‘s unlimited movie and TV video streaming service has released its latest monthly Netflix ISP Speed Index update for June 2013, which is designed to reveal which ISPs deliver “the best streaming experience“. Suffice to say that not a lot has changed since earlier this year and Virgin Media remains top.

The Co-Founder and CTO of UK ISP Timico, Trefor Davies, has called for “government intervention” to split off the “rural bits” of BTOpenreach’s network (BT can keep the urban bits that compete with Virgin Media) and to help rollout a truly national ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP) service to every home and business.

The Birmingham City Council (BCC) will shortly (15th July 2013) vote on a new scheme to help improve broadband coverage in the city by rolling out an “unlimited” free wireless internet (wifi) hotspot service across “key parts of the city centre“.

The European Commission (EC) has revealed that 45% of EU citizens would upgrade their broadband connection or swap ISP entirely to get faster internet speeds. Separately another 40% said that they found it difficult to access internet content and services due to “insufficient speed or download capacity“.

The non-profit B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) scheme, which is rolling out a “hyperfast” 1000Mbps capable community-built Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in rural Lancashire (England, UK) and has now connected 170 premises, hopes to secure an extra £875k from the RCBF and a bank loan of £500k to boost its coverage.

Oxfordshire-based EuropaSat (SSW) has signed a new agreement that will allow them to add a new range of ‘up to’ 20Mbps Ka-band based satellite broadband products from SES (ASTRA) to their existing portfolio of home and business packages, which already includes services from Eutelsat (KA-SAT) and Avanti (HYLAS).

The latest map from Point Topic has revealed that uptake of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) based internet connections in the United Kingdom has now reached 20% (Q1-2013), which is largely thanks to Virgin Media’s effort to double its customers speeds and thus lift several million consumers into the same area of performance.
