Cable operator Virgin Media has signed 2012 London Olympic Games champion Mo Farah, whom famously won a gold medal in both the 5,000m and 10,000m runs for Great Britain, to help promote its superfast broadband services alongside sporting icon Usain Bolt.

The results from 1068 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly web-based survey has revealed that 63.6% would never return to a broadband ISP that had previously caused them problems and 78.3% are now unwilling to sacrifice quality for a cheaper price. Can ISPs ever overcome a bad reputation?

JT Global (formerly Jersey Telecom) has signed a new deal with Swedish open access network specialist Netadmin Systems to help it manage the operation and roll-out of their ultra-fast fibre optic broadband (FTTH) service to 42,000 premises on Jersey (Channel Islands) within the next 3 years.

A successful £4.5m bid by the Hampshire County Council‘s (HCC) transport division to the UK government’s £50m Better Bus Area Fund (BBAF) means that commuters travelling on local bus services in South Hampshire (Southampton, Portsmouth etc.) will soon gain free wireless internet (wifi) access.

The long suffering Digital Region network, which offers an alternative superfast broadband platform to BT in South Yorkshire, has received a boost after it adopted Fluidata’s Service Exchange Platform (SEP). The move could give local homes a choice of more than 50 ISPs instead of just a handful.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest study of the United Kingdom’s average fixed line internet performance. The report, which is based on data from May 2012, reveals that the average broadband download speed has jumped from 7.6Mbps (Megabits/sec) in the last survey to reach 9Mbps now (+19%).

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its latest Internet Access Quarterly Update Q2-2012, which found that a total of 42.52 million UK adults have gone online (84% of the population; up from 83.7% in Q1). The number of adults who have never used the internet has thus declined since Q1 by -4% to 7.82 million (16%).

Yorkshire-based Fixed Wireless ISP Quickline Communications has claimed that it will be able to bring superfast internet download speeds of up to 40Mbps to 100% of the “worst served broadband areas” in rural north and north east Lincolnshire by the end of 2012.

An Ofcom commissioned CSMG investigation into the impact of IP address sharing upon website blocking measures, which makes such methods “technically complex” for ISPs to implement, has found that 97% of “top-level domains” (.com, .net and .org) reside on addresses that are shared with other sites. Block one and you risk hurting others.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed in its latest quarterly Telecoms Market Data Tables Q1 2012 report that the UK is now home to a total of 20.89 million fixed line home and small business broadband ISP connections (up from 20.43m in Q4-2011), which includes 552k superfast fibre optic based services (e.g. FTTC).

National UK cable operator Virgin Media has this week become one of the last big fixed line broadband ISPs to block customers from being able to access the Newzbin (Newzbin2) website, which is deemed by the High Court to be a site that facilitates internet piracy (copyright infringement).

Broadband ISP supplier O2 Wholesale UK (BE Wholesale) has warned that an “average business” of 50 employees can eat 61GB (GigaBytes) of internet data a month (i.e. email 26GB, browsing 22GB, video 1.7GB and video conferencing 7.9GB), which is allegedly more expensive for rival providers to cater for than their own “unlimited” option.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today published a new UK map of broadband speed availability, which claims that 13% of UK homes and businesses (nearly 4 million premises) still can’t receive internet download speeds of above 2Mbps (Megabits per second) and most are in rural areas.
