Transport for London (Tfl) has announced that passengers at 50 London Overground stations can now access The Cloud’s (BSkyB) free wireless internet (wifi) service and the final seven stations are due to be enabled by the end of June 2013.

The European Commission (EC) has today published new data on the number of broadband lines and ISP speed in Member States, including the UK, gathered to July 2012. Overall 95.7% of EU homes are already passed by at least one fixed broadband ISP but 9.1 million homes still do not have coverage (over 90% of which are in rural areas).

The boss of telecoms analyst firm Point Topic, Oliver Johnson, has warned that blowing true fibre optic lines (FTTH / P) along the streets and across the fields of Europe and the United Kingdom is ultimately “super-expensive” and thus no longer the “first choice” when it comes to building new superfast broadband networks.

BTWholesale, the wholesale division of national UK telecoms operator BT, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its up to 20Mbps (ADSL2+) capable 21CN based Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) platform will be extended beyond their current targets and into more rural areas to reach over 92% of the country.

Consultancy group Analysys Mason has warned that the UK government’s plan to make faster 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services available to “at least 98%” of the country by the end of 2017 may not work as a viable “replacement” for slower legacy copper based fixed line services in rural areas.

The Institute of Directors, an organisation for EU business leaders, polled 1,147 of its members to reveal that faster broadband could improve productivity at 83% of companies, encourage 31% to invest more in their business and cause 15% of firms to hire more staff. But it also criticised BTOpenreach in the UK for low service satisfaction levels.

Cable operator Virgin Media has moved to “support the government’s ambitions for the country” by announcing the creation of 400 new jobs across the United Kingdom. Overall they will add 90 new engineers, 80 customer care assistants and 230 customer service and technical support staff.

The boss of business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has warned companies to think of their broadband connection before ceasing an old fax line (facsimile). The warning comes after the internet provider noticed a trend where some firms would cancel fax services without realising that the same line was also being used for broadband.

Humax has announced the retail release of its new DTR-T1010 set-top-box for the YouView (IPTV) service, which offers broadband based catch-up TV and video-on-demand services via several UK ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, KC and JT); it can also be purchased separately from £299.99. But don’t expect anything too new.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen (UA) in Scotland, supported by BT and Alcatel-Lucent, are seeking to “increase the speed of the Internet” by re-writing the way computers and network devices (e.g. routers) talk to each other so as to improve latency times (ping) and potentially make multiplayer games and video streaming smoother.

The Isle of Wight’s (England, UK) only provider of commercial and residential cable based TV, phone and broadband products, WightFibre (formerly WightCable), has accused the councils delayed roll-out plan for superfast broadband ISP services of being “biased in favour of BT” and of having shunned alternatives.

Customers of Sky Broadband (BSkyB), specifically those that use the ISPs existing Sky Email service, have been advised that they will shortly be migrated to a new Yahoo! based webmail platform (Sky Yahoo! Mail) because “Google is no longer able to provide Sky with an email platform that caters for our requirements“.

RootMetrics has posted the results from 95,672 separate speedtests of EE’s new 4G (LTE 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network in the UK cities of Liverpool, Cardiff and Sheffield. The study found that EE was broadly living up to its promise of delivering internet speeds that range from 8-12Mbps (Megabits per second).
