A new Home Broadband Survey 2013, which combined the results from 50,000 speed tests with consumer research from OnePoll, has named PlusNet the best broadband provider in the United Kingdom after it secured the highest scores across most categories (e.g. speed satisfaction, support and reliability).

As expected the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to allow 4G (LTE) superfast Mobile Broadband services to also be delivered over the 900MHz, 1800MHz (EE are at present the only one allowed to do this) and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands that are currently used for a mix of existing 2G and 3G services.

National UK telecoms operator BT has today released its latest Q4-2012 financial results, which revealed that their retail broadband ISP subscriber base grew by +122k (up from +88k in Q3-2012) to total 6,569,000 customers (more than 1m of which are fibre optic based BTInfinity superfast broadband subscribers).

BTOpenreach has today started a four-week long technical trial for its new 220Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP product, which will be available from telephone exchanges in Bradwell Abbey, Chester South, Exeter and York (England).

Researchers from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland (UK) have begun to develop a new Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology that could turn ordinary LED (Light-Emitting Diode) based home and office lighting or computer displays into a sophisticated wireless communications network like WiFi.

Zen Internet has today launched a new symmetric 10Mbps (Megabits per second) capable NGA Ethernet service for businesses in the United Kingdom. The new product is based off two of the latest Next Generation Access (NGA) technologies, Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).

The South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and Wiltshire Council (WC) have today become the latest to sign a new £35.6m contract with BT that will make superfast broadband ISP speeds (25Mbps+) available to 94% of local homes and businesses by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today released their latest results to 31st December 2012 (Q4-2012), which saw the operator increase its growth by adding +132,000 new quarterly fixed line internet access subscribers to reach a total customer base of 4,235,000 (up from +102k added in Q3-2012).

The joint Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) scheme in England has finally signed a £94m contract with BT that will make “high-speed fibre broadband” ISP services available to “around” 90% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2016.

Competition in the UK and EU markets for Satellite based internet access, which can help to serve remote rural areas, is heating up and as a result Eutelsat (Tooway) will today announce a series of new packages for their KA-SAT spacecraft at 9° East. Faster speeds of up to 20Mbps and unlimited data allowances are two of several enhancements.

The government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport has launched a new consultation on proposals that would see telecoms operators, such as BT, given a five year period of grace with which to install new street cabinets and poles (but not mobile masts) without the need for prior approval from a local planning authority.

The Treasury Minister for Jersey (Channel Islands), Senator Philip Ozouf, has criticised local telecoms operator JT Global (Jersey Telecom) for allowing an issue with one of its subcontractors to allegedly slow the progress of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network.
