The Cloud (BSkyB) has this week signed a new deal that will see high street retailer WHSmith rolling out a free wireless internet (wifi) service to 603 of its stores across the United Kingdom.

The Suffolk County Council (SCC) has today confirmed that its £40 million contract to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services available to 85-90% of local homes and businesses by 2015 has unsurprisingly been awarded to BT. Just 2% of the “hardest to reach premises” will be left with sub-5Mbps speeds.

The results from 1,613 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly web-based reader poll has revealed that 81.5% claim to “require” a minimum real-world broadband download speed of equal to or greater than 10Mbps (Megabits per second) but only a third (34.4%) actually receive their currently required speed.

Ofcom has approved BTOpenreach’s request to extend a connection price discount for its superfast broadband (FTTC) lines by two months, which cut the one-off cost from £80 to just £30 +vat when taken alongside a new phone line (WLR or MPF). Sadly only ISP customers in certain parts of England (UK) will benefit.

Quickline Communications, which operates a fixed wireless broadband network around various parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has signed a new wholesale agreement with OrbitalNet that will allow its service to reach customers in Kent and put it into direct competition with local rival Vfast. Sort of.

The UK government’s Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) has quietly launched a new public consultation that aims to find and fill the last remaining sub-2Mbps broadband ISP slowspots in Northern Ireland, which is despite the regions superfast broadband availability already being close to 100%.

ISPreview.co.uk has learnt that Pulse DSL, a little known broadband provider for the UK market, quietly ceased trading during July 2012. Its website has now vanished but the ISP looks set to make a surprise comeback, albeit under a different brand.

Customers of cable operator Virgin Media are continuing to complain of problems with the ISPs SuperHub wireless router / modem kit, which is shipped alongside their superfast broadband packages. Thankfully a new firmware is on the way and this one might just fix the device for good; but we did say “might“.
