Openreach-2025-UK-FTTP-Engineers-in-rural-land

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has issued a contract modification notice for Openreach’s £157m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract in Scotland (Call off 6), which originally aimed to reach 65,070 premises in remote rural areas. But the change means it will now be expanded to tackle 77,639 premises.

The UK telecoms, media and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has this week written to the Prime Minister (Keir Starmer), Chancellor of the Exchequer (Rachel Reeves) and Secretary of State for Business and Trade (Peter Kyle), among others, to update them on how its work is “contributing to innovation, investment and growth in the UK“.

Industry trade body Mobile UK, which represents EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK), has warned that the UK’s ambition to become an “AI superpower” will struggle without “high quality 5G Standalone (5GSA) networks acting as the ‘nervous system’“. But it warns that we “lag behind other leading nations” in this area and must reform the planning system.

Broadband provider VISPA has recently become subject to another “First Gazette notice for compulsory strike-off” (petitioner: HMRC) – as shown on the Companies House (CH) website, which follows both a significant delay to the publication of their latest accounts (CH’s website states their next accounts were “due by 31 January 2025“) and adoption of CH’s default address.

The not-for-profit housing association, Peabody, which is responsible for almost 109,000 homes (220,000 residents) across London and the Home Counties of England, has signed a new framework agreement with SCCI Alphatrack (SCCI Group) to deploy their single shared full fibre broadband infrastructure solution (4Fibre) to residents homes.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their first biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for 2026 (January), which reveals that Tesco Mobile was – for the second consecutive report – the only mobile and broadband (telecoms) provider to make it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations. But both Virgin Mobile and Three UK were still named among the most improved.

The country’s largest alternative broadband operator, CityFibre, has this morning announced that they’ve “unlocked” their nationwide footprint and made their business Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) services available across 4.5 million premises – offering wholesale business products at data speeds of up to 2.5Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The latest 2026 Sunday Times 100 Tech list has been published, which reflects a ranking of Britain’s fastest-growing private technology companies. The good news is that six broadband network operators have managed to make it into the 2026 hardware list, with Netomnia topping the table in 3rd place and CityFibre just edging in at 48th at the bottom.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency recently provided a small but useful update on their stalled £43m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for Cheshire (Lot 17), which was originally held by Freedom Fibre until they “mutually agreed to terminate” it in March 2025 (here). But Openreach (BT) may now be set to take it on.

Sources have informed ISPreview that broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media (O2) has today notified around 700 staff that their roles are to be transferred to the Indian owned Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tech Mahindra. The move is intended to “better deliver for our customers“, although this could still result in some redundancies.

Quickline brand campaign 2026

Alternative rural broadband provider Quickline, which is deploying a new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) network across parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England (3-Year Rollout Plan), has today revealed that their fibre network now covers 200,000 premises (plus 200k more via wireless) and they’re launching a new brand campaign.

The relatively new SpeedGeo project, which stems from a Polish team that compares internet quality based on the broadband speeds of real users, has today published their 2025 results for the United Kingdom. The outcome named Virgin Media as the fastest fixed broadband ISP, while Three UK came top for mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.).

A major newspaper has claimed that creditors of the indebted Abingdon-based alternative broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has built a full fibre (FTTP) network across 612,000 premises in rural parts of England and is home to c.160,000 customers, are set to take control of the business after an attempt to sell the company failed.

Openreach (BT) has just published the next batch (Tranche 23) of 132 exchanges in their “FTTP Priority Exchange” stop sell programme – covering 1.23 million premises. This reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre lines and will thus stop selling copper based legacy phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option, where it’s available).

Network operator KCOM, which has deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across a big chunk of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England, has today announced that they’ve promoted Richard Schäfer to the position of permanent Chief Executive Office (CEO) to replace Tim Shaw, who stepped down last year (here).
