Consumer magazine Which? has just published the results of its latest survey, which claims to reveal the best and worst UK mobile operators. Overall the four primary operators – O2 (VMO2), EE (BT), Vodafone and Three UK – were “outperformed” by smaller virtual networks, such as Smarty, Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile etc.

In an unexpected development, Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they are currently consulting with UK broadband ISPs on a proposal that could see a “stop sell” being placed on their sometimes troublesome FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) product, which could potentially be introduced in late 2022.

One of the most common challenges when deploying and maintaining “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks is the impact of dust. A single microscopic speck of dust – impossible to see with the human eye – could feasibly lead to a data communication failure and create performance problems for thousands of customers.

British-registered satellite broadband company OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government, has complemented their recent launch deal with SpaceX by signing an additional contract for rocket launches with New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

One of Openreach’s senior UK broadband and phone engineers, Amjed, recently got the shock of his life while making repairs at a property in Glasgow. Upon removing one of the operator’s copper phone extension sockets from a wall, he came across a wasp’s nest. We assume he must have been investigating a buzzing sound on the line 🙂 .

Internet service provider No One, which is a residential-focused sibling of business ISP Trunk Networks (inc. Leetline), has reduced the prices on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages from networks supplied by both Openreach and CityFibre.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has this week informed customers that they’re currently “updating” their systems so that they can be “even more innovative, efficient and streamlined“, which among other things is expected to result in “better customer service“, a better sales experience and “quicker development of new products“.

UK ISP Giganet (formerly M12 Solutions), which is investing £250m to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 300,000 premises across South England (here), has announced that the company’s founder – Andrew Skipsey – is to step down after 19 long years.

Mobile operator EE (BT) today claims to have become the “first European network” to combine (Carrier Aggregation) seven different spectrum carriers via its existing 3.4GHz and new 3.6GHz channels, among others, in order to push 5G based mobile broadband speeds up to 2.2Gbps (Gigabits per second) in testing.

Openreach has this week launched a new Ethernet (Ethernet Access Direct) product – EAD Rugged 1G – into the UK market that has been designed to replace their ‘Street Access‘ service, which enables ISPs to run a dedicated 1Gbps fibre optic line to connect street furniture (bus shelters, kiosks, lamp posts, cabinets etc.).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE, which is available to broadband customers across both FTTC (VDSL2) and FTTP networks from various operators (e.g. Openreach), has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that it plans to launch a new multi-play home entertainment platform this summer via their new ‘One Box‘ TV set-top-box (STB) device.
