CityFibre has today completed their £43m rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the Buckinghamshire (England) town of Milton Keynes, which has reached 90,000 homes (c.90% of the addressable residential properties, as well as most businesses and key public sector sites).

Mobile operator Vodafone UK will tomorrow enhance their Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans (i.e. Big Value Bundles) by doubling the amount of mobile broadband data that you can get and at “no additional cost“. Existing PAYG customers will also benefit from the increased data allowance, which will be “automatically updated for them“.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has enhanced the existing discount on some of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages (specifically the 500Mbps and 900Mbps plans) by adding a £50 bill credit for new customers. The new offer is expected to run until 3rd July 2022.

A new Cable.co.uk study has tested fixed broadband ISP packages from 220 countries to create a global price comparison, which finds that the UK ranks just 92nd cheapest (down sharply from 67th last year) with an average monthly cost of $39.01 (£29.66). But we drop to 101st (down from 93rd) for average cost per megabit ($0.90).

UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has today given their business and wholesale connectivity division a boost by entering into an agreement to acquire Virtual1 for an undisclosed sum. The deal will help to grow their scale as a national provider of Ethernet (EAD / leased line) solutions and to strengthen its capabilities.

Rural focused UK ISP County Broadband has announced a major £100 million funding boost from existing backer Aviva Investors, which will enable them to target their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises across the East of England by the end of 2027.

UK ISP Brsk has today confirmed that the rollout of their new gigabit-capable and “open access” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which is most active around parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and West Yorkshire, has just reached 27,000 homes passed with 2,000 customers live in under 10 months.

The Scottish Government (SG) has announced that five more broadband network providers have committed to supporting Scotland’s Full Fibre Charter, including Borderlink, Cloudnet, Hyperoptic, Lothian Broadband and Virgin Media (VMO2). The charter consists of a series of pledges to help extend full fibre coverage.

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorries, has increased the pressure on big UK ISPs by calling on them to put more effort into promoting the existence of cheaper “social tariffs” for home broadband, which are usually offered to those who may be unemployed or on certain benefits.

Credible sources have informed ISPreview that UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast, Sky TV) are about to launch a new 900Mbps “Gigafast” package for homes, which will continue to be based off Openreach’s 1000Mbps (115Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product tier and should cost £55 per month.

Some of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) UK broadband and TV customers have complained that the ISP, which recently scrapped exit fees for those that move into off-net areas (here), is now sending mixed messages by failing to clearly communicate the change and instead stating that Early Disconnection Fees (EDFs) “may” apply.

One of the few positives to come from the recent inflation surge is that Ofcom has just increased the payment amounts issued to consumers under their automatic compensation system, which requires some UK ISPs to compensate customers (cash or bill credits) for broadband connectivity mishaps and delivery delays.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) recently completed a project that has successfully showed how civil engineering work by three different utility providers – full fibre UK broadband ISP G.Network, water firm Thames Water and gas supplier SGN – can be combined and coordinated to help reduce disruption, cut costs and save time.

UK ISP Giganet, which is investing £250m to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the South of England, today claims to have rebranded itself as Pastanet after moving to replace their traditional fibre optic cabling, made from glass, with “faster” wholewheat pasta.
