Budget ISP Plusnet has further reduced the price of their unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages today, with their ‘up to’ 38Mbps service being cut to £25 a month for 18 months (£32.98 thereafter) and their 76Mbps option dropping to £30 for the same period (£37.98 thereafter).

Cityfibre has suspended one of their civil works contractors, KNNS, in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland). The action occurred after a dashcam video emerged that showed one of their fibre optic engineers sitting exposed in a manhole on a busy 30MPH street, with only two small traffic cones for protection.

The Superfast Worcestershire (England) project with BT (Openreach), which is currently working to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to “more than” 95% of the county in 2017, has announced that an extra 3,000 premises will benefit from a £3.7 million expansion.

The Conservative MP for Boston and Skegness, Matt Warman, has accused ISPs of being “complicit in fraud” for the way they advertise broadband speeds in the United Kingdom and has called a Westminster Hall event to debate the issue at 4.30pm tomorrow. He also wants “fibre” to only mean FTTP/H ISPs.

The latest independently calculated coverage data has estimated that fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks are now available to order at 92.5% of homes and businesses across the United Kingdom. Plus “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) services are available to 51.2%.

Metronet UK, which has built its own hybrid fibre optic and wireless data network in several urban areas around the United Kingdom, has today acquired rival ISP Venus Business Communications. Venus operates a 10Gbps Dark Fibre network that covers “all of central London and the City“.

Several whistle-blowers’ claim to have revealed details of a significant scam that operated from “call centres” in two Indian cities and involved “hundreds of staff“, many of which had been “hired to scam customers” of UK based broadband and phone provider TalkTalk.

We’ve not seen any special offers from Sky Broadband’s range of superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages for quite a long time but all of that just changed after they introduced a range of 18 month discounts, which significantly cuts the monthly rental.

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that 10,000 premises in Scotland’s Midlothian council area will gain access to their TV and 300Mbps capable broadband network before the end of 2018, which forms part of the operator’s wider expansion to another 360,000 premises across the country.

The European Commission has released their 2017 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2016 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress towards the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). Sadly we’ve dropped from 6th to 7th place.
