Ofcom UK Tweak Makes In-Car Mobile Signal Boosters More Useful UPDATE

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make a “slight change” to the technical parameters allowed for licence exempt use of in-vehicle low gain mobile phone repeaters (aka – signal boosters / signal enhancers), which in theory could help to improve mobile reception inside vehicles.

Mobile operator Three UK has discounted their 4G “unlimited data” and Huawei AICubeB900 router based mobile broadband plan, which is now being offered at just £13 per month for the first 6 months of service (rising to £26 thereafter) when taken on a 24 month contract term.

A new study by TravelSim has analysed the number of free wifi hotspots, cost per MegaByte of data, average broadband speeds (mobile / wireless) and the number of hotels and airports with free wifi in 19 of the world’s most visited destinations to find the best and worst cities to stay connected whilst travelling.

Vodafone UK to Switch-Off 3G Mobile Network Within 2-3 Years

Vodafone has quietly become the first UK provider to confirm that it will be “switching off 3G” services within the “next two to three years,” although we fully expect that EE, O2 and Three UK will eventually do something similar as they convert 3G spectrum to 4G or 5G. But 2G voice will remain as a useful low-power fall back.

Poor UK Mobile Signals Cause 21% of Brits to Stop Gym Exercises

How about this for an unusual study. A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, claims to have found that 21% of respondents stopped exercising at the Gym in order to try and resolve issues with a poor signal. WiFi isn’t much better either.

Tutela Study Names Fastest UK 4G Mobile Operators for H1 2019

Crowdsourced data analysis company Tutela has revealed the results from their latest study of mobile broadband performance (i.e. speeds, latency, jitter and packet loss) across the United Kingdom. Overall EE (BT) remains top of the pack for 4G networks, while Three UK does the best for older 3G services.

Study Claims £2.2bn Paid for UK Mobile Data Due to Poor Home Internet

A new piece of research from WiredScore and the HomeOwners Alliance has claimed that British homeowners and renters are having to pay out £2.2 billion each year in “unnecessary” mobile data (3G / 4G) fees because they suffer from “poor internet” connectivity at home.

2019 Report Ranks UK 27th in World for Mobile Broadband Speeds

The latest 2019 State of Mobile Network report from Opensignal has ranked the United Kingdom 27th out of 87 countries in the world for its average Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) download speed (21.7Mbps), as well as 30th for upload speeds (7.4Mbps), 29th for latency times (46ms) and 26th for 4G network availability (84.7%).

Ofcom Owes UK Mobile Operators £220m in Licence Fee Dispute

The UK High Court of Justice has ruled that Ofcom must pay back £220m to mobile operators as part of restitution for the regulator’s handling of a licence fee hike to the 900MHz and 1800MHz (3G and 4G) spectrum bands (i.e. £82.4m to EE, £54.4m for Vodafone, £54.4m for O2 and £26.9m for Three UK).

Tesco’s UK Mobile Network Loses 4G Data Connectivity UPDATE

Some customers of the Tesco Mobile network appear to be flooding the operator’s Twitter feed with complaints about a loss of 4G and 3G based data (mobile broadband) connectivity, which appears to have started more than 24 hours ago and remains on-going today.

Ofcom Finds Full Fibre Broadband Available to 7% of UK Premises

Ofcom has published a Spring 2019 update to last year’s Connected Nations 2018 report, which uses more recent data to provide the latest coverage statistics for UK mobile and fixed line broadband networks. The key change is that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 7% (i.e. over 300K premises in the last 4 months, nearly 1.8 million total).

Q1 2019 OpenSignal Report Names EE as Best UK Mobile Operator

Mobile operator EE (BT) has once again come top of the latest Q1 2019 report from OpenSignal, which analysed crowd-sourced data over a 90 day period (starting 1st December 2018) to identify the 4G availability, mobile broadband speeds and latency performance of each UK operator.

Ofcom Fines O2 UK £75K Over Response to Traffic Management Probe

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has been fined £75,000 by Ofcom for “failing to provide accurate and complete answers” to the regulator, which occured as part of last year’s investigation into the operator’s Traffic Management practices on their 3G and 4G network.

Three UK – Mobile Broadband Data Use Per Customer Rises to 8.3GB

Mobile operator Three UK has today released their full year results for 2018, which amongst other things revealed that monthly Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) data usage per customer grew by 22% during the year (vs 7% in the previous year) from 6.8GB to 8.3GB (GigaBytes) and population coverage is now 99% (up from 98.5%).

Coventry Named Best of 16 UK Cities for Mobile Network Performance

RootMetrics (IHS Markit) has today published the results from their H2 2018 study into 4G and 3G mobile network performance across 16 of the United Kingdom’s “most populated metropolitan markets” (cities), which found that Coventry and Leicester were the best. Sadly London and Birmingham were the worst.
