The UK Government has today announced their plan to open a new “state-of-the-art UK Telecommunications Lab” in Solihull (West Midlands), which will bring together broadband operators, suppliers and academics to research and test innovative new ways of boosting the security, resilience and speed of 5G and future 6G mobile networks.

techUK, an industry group for many of the UK’s key technology companies, has today published the outcome of their review into the progress that the Government have been making on rolling out both ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband and full fibre networks across the country. Needless to say, a few areas need improvement.

Ofcom’s autumn 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 37% of the UK, while 20.2 million homes (68%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network and 48-64% of premises can now get outdoor 5G coverage by at least one operator.

The Essex County Council in England has this week launched its new £1.88m Digital Essex programme – part of the wider Digital Strategy for Essex (here), which among other things will develop a “local grant scheme” to provide additional funding to reach the final 1% of rural premises that still cannot access “decent broadband“.

The United Kingdom has succeeded in getting itself elected to hold a seat on the influential governing council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which will give it more of a say in future standards (broadband, satellite, mobile technologies etc.) and the allocation of global radio spectrum etc.

After months of speculation, mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today confirmed that they are officially in “discussions” with Three UK’s parent (CK Hutchison Holdings) about the possibility of a merger. Such a deal would give the combined business the “necessary scale” to boost their 5G rollout and “expand” rural broadband connectivity.

Two of the UK’s most prominent developers of cutting edge fixed wireless access (FWA) and mobile broadband equipment – Curvalux and the Cambridge Broadband Networks Group (CBNG) – have today completed a merger. The two companies will remain independent, with CBNG becoming a subsidiary of Curvalux.

The mobile division of supermarket chain ASDA has launched somewhat of an early “Black Friday exclusive” promotion by discounting the price of their Pay Monthly (1-month term) “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) bundles for new customers, which now start at just £15 per month.

Customers of mobile operator Three UK, specifically those looking to adopt their 5G unlimited Home Broadband packages (£20 per month – first 6 months at £10), may like to know that they’re no longer shipping it with a ZTE based router and have instead replaced it with the Zyxel NR5103E. But getting 5G to work is another matter.

A new experimental test of early 6G mobile broadband technology, which was conducted by LG Electronics (LG) at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Germany, has demonstrated a wireless signal working over the TeraHertz (THz) band that could reach a distance of 320 metres (significant, given the spectrum).

Earlier this year giffgaff announced that, in order to help ease the burden of rising costs, they would freeze the prices on all of their UK tariffs for the rest of 2022. The good news is that they’ve now made the decision to extend this by freezing their UK prices until the end of 2023.

British-registered satellite broadband operator OneWeb has joined with the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey (5GIC) and CGI to launch a new 5G-Pilot Test project, which will trial the ability to harness the firm’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) network to communicate with terrestrial 5G mobile devices (phones etc.).

A new report from the Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), an industry think-tank, has warned that the UK’s rollout of faster 5G based mobile broadband networks may struggle to achieve some of its much-hyped goals by 2030 because of an investment gap of around £3 billion to £5 billion.

The UK Government’s recent changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure (here), which aimed to help extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres), appear to have been rejected in West Berkshire where the council has added new obstacles.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that, as part of their measures to help tackle the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, they’ve enabled it so that customers can access seven financial advice and guidance websites without eating into their mobile broadband data allowance (i.e. zero rating).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced the next phase of its effort to rollout their ultrafast 5G based network across the United Kingdom, which among other changes, will extend its network across 14 further towns and cities. Interestingly, they’re also deploying the existing 2100MHz band for 5G in 14 different locations.

Sometimes when you try particularly hard to hide something big, you end up making it even more obvious – this seems to be what happened after EE and Three UK attempted to hide a new 25-metre mobile mast in the town of South Queensferry by making it look like a tree. But it ended up looking like a giant toilet brush instead.
