Virgin Media and O2 have reportedly entered “exclusive talks” that could see them selling off a big stake in the UK’s largest mobile tower network to GLIL Infrastructure. The deal is said to value this part of their business at around £2.5bn, with any proceeds helping to fund their full fibre (FTTP) broadband and 5G mobile roll out.

OneWeb (Eutelsat), CGI and Icomera have just conducted their first demonstration of connecting a moving railway train in North Yorkshire (England), which harnessed backhaul capacity via their constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to feed onboard connectivity via a 5G mobile network.

The tedious debate around whether EU and UK regulators should release the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band for use by WiFi or Mobile networks (or share it between both) has taken another twist after Vodafone conducted a new test, which used the band to achieve 5G mobile broadband downloads of “up to” 5Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The UK telecoms regulator has proposed to soften their requirements for licence exempt indoor “mobile phone repeaters” in order to reflect both the introduction of in-vehicle 5G and the withdrawal of older 2G and 3G networks. Most operators (except O2) expect to close 3G by the end of 2024, while both 2G and 3G must be switched-off by 2033 (here).

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their first Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI), which is designed to enable policymakers and digital leaders to identify where a region performs well and where challenges remain when it comes to mobile (4G, 5G), gigabit broadband, skills and other areas.

Mobile operators Three UK, O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone have reportedly warned the government that the first phase of their £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project, which aims to extend geographic 4G (mobile broadband) coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025, is at risk of being delayed by 2 years.

Eutelsat OneWeb has announced that its global constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) has, via a demonstration that was set up in Surrey (England), successfully connected to a 5G mobile network as part of a pilot. But the technical details of this test remain unclear.

Ofcom has today begun seeking feedback on the possibility of releasing another chunk of the 1.4GHz radio spectrum band – specifically the 25MHz slice of frequency between 1492-1517MHz – for use by modern 4G, 5G or even future 6G based UK mobile and mobile broadband networks.

But its recommendations for broadband and mobile are wafer thin.

Crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal will today publish their annual 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2023 report, which examines the performance of 5G using mobile operators across the world and awards those that perform the best. But you won’t find any wins for EE (BT), Three UK (3), Vodafone UK or O2 UK (VMO2).

Sometimes, less is more, or at least that’s the idea behind BT (EE) and Nokia’s latest trials of 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) technology and devices at the operator’s Adastral Park site in Ipswich (England). RedCap is a technology introduced in 3GPP Release 17 that brings 5G to devices that do not require its full capabilities.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today refreshed some of their SIM Only “Pay As You Go” mobile plans (Big Bundles), which sees a number of their plans getting a data allowance (mobile broadband) boost for no extra cost. The £15 for 25GB “Rolling Plan” has also been boosted to 30GB, although the rest of their Rolling Plans are unchanged.

A new report has revealed that the prototype BlueWalker 3 satellite in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which was launched by AST SpaceMobile to provide 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) coverage to regular handsets on the ground, is so big that it outshines 99% of the stars visible from a dark location on Earth – that’s a problem.
