The European Commission has published their annual ‘Broadband Coverage in Europe’ study, which reveals how the EU’s fixed broadband and 5G mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Opensignal has published their latest biannual Mobile Network Experience Report for H2 2023, which benchmarks the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services from all four primary UK mobile operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which ones deliver the best performance. Overall, EE and Three UK seem to fair the best.

The UK media and telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed more details about their proposed plan to auction off a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum frequency across the 26GHz and 40GHz bands, which will be used by mobile operators to deliver even faster 5G (mobile broadband) services in urban areas.

Transport for London (TfL) – in partnership with Boldyn Networks – today confirmed that Euston station on the Charing Cross branch platforms has today become the latest place on the London Underground to go live with 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) cover, which customers of EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK will benefit from.

A new study has analysed 5,603 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 237 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which reveals that the United Kingdom slightly improved its rank from 59th in 2022 to 58th in 2023, with an average price of USD $0.62 per GB (down from $0.79).

Some of Virgin Media and O2’s UK broadband and mobile customers have, in recent weeks, reported having noticed a few changes to the combined operator’s “Volt” bundles, which appears to have quietly resulted in some significant feature downgrades (slower internet speeds, fewer extras etc.) and higher prices.

The UK government’s new Smart Infrastructure Pilots Programme (SIPP) has committed £1.3 million to help six areas across the country to trial “smart street lamps“, which will be upgraded to house both Electric Vehicle (EV) charging hubs and boost wireless coverage (broadband and mobile), including via 5G or free public WiFi technology.

AST SpaceMobile, which is backed by Vodafone and several other mobile operators around the world, has followed up their earlier achievements in two-way 4G calling by harnessing their prototype BlueWalker 3 satellite in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to make the first space-based 5G internet voice call using a regular handset.

At present most 5G networks are data-only (mobile broadband) services, but EE (BT) has revealed that it recently carried out the UK’s first call over 5G in the network using Voice over New Radio (VoNR or Vo5G) technology. Ofcom’s summer 2023 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 52% of the UK (up from 48% in Jan 2023), while 75% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 73%) and 76-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (up from 73-82%).
