Sky Mobile, which is an O2 (VMO2) powered mobile operator (MVNO), is adding cellular laptops to its range of available devices from just £11 a month (includes mobile broadband plan). Customers who take one of these will benefit from Sky’s data rollover feature (i.e. any unused data each month gets rolled into a Piggybank which can be used later – either for a data boost, to share with other SIMs on their plan or to purchase accessories).

The UK government (DSIT) has today announced that, as part of the new Wireless Infrastructure Strategy (WIS), they have set out an ambition to “blanket the country with the fastest, most reliable wireless coverage available” – with the plan being for “all populated areas to be covered by ‘standalone’ 5G (5G-plus) by 2030“. The update also includes support for satellite broadband in rural areas and more trials of flexi permits.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) will later this morning be introducing some new offers on their Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans, which will see double data across all their ‘Big Bundle’ and selected ‘Rolling Plan’ tariffs for both new and existing customers. But this will only last for up to 3 months.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has their latest Mobile Network Experience Report for Q1 2023, which examines the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all four primary network operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which delivers the best performance. Once again, Three UK and EE continued to sweep the awards.

Mobile network operator giffgaff, which normally only offers Pay As You Go (PAYG) and 30-day (monthly) style contract plans, has announced that they’re planning to introduce a new set of mobile plans with an 18-month minimum term from 11th April 2023. Expect to pay less for more mobile broadband data.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve “reintroduced” a WiFi service for their customers travelling on the London Underground, which comes after they scrapped their original service (here) – supplied via a wholesale network run by Virgin Media – back in 2021.

Mobile operators Three UK and EE (BT) have agreed to stop jointly upgrading sites through the Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) organisation, which runs their joint network sharing venture. The move is intended to help both move faster when deploying new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband networks.

Mobile operator Three UK, specifically its business division, has today launched £300,000 worth of “free connectivity grants” for small businesses (SME) in Manchester and Birmingham, which follows new research that found better biz connectivity could contribute over £5bn a year to the local economies.

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is the virtual operator sibling of Vodafone UK, has doubled the data on their two entry-level plans for customers who order between now and 4th May 2023. As a result, you now get 30GB for just £10 per month and 60GB for £15 per month on a 30-day term.

Digital Catapult and Ofcom have today opened a new testing facility for Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) technology, which is funded by the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and hopes to push forward the rollout of new O-RAN based 4G and 5G mobile networks.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun fielding industry views on how it could improve Shared Spectrum Licences, which enable small businesses to create their own local wireless broadband and mobile networks across various radio spectrum bands (many of these could previously only be used by national operators).

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has published their annual infrastructure review, which highlights how the UK is making “rapid” progress in rolling out gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks and expects the Government to “achieve its target” for nationwide coverage by 2030. Ofcom has today announced that they may revoke the current mobile operator licences – held by EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (VMO2) – for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1900-1920 MHz), which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) in England has launched a new voucher scheme to help local “businesses suffering from the slowest broadband speeds“, which will provide funding to help them connect via an alternative 4G-based mobile broadband solution.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) appears to have launched a tariff refresh of their Pay Monthly (SIM-Only and Phone) plans today, which sees some prices rise (others stay the same), tweaks to data allowances and possibly a few additional changes that we’ve yet to fully identify.

O2 (VMO2) has just become the last of the four primary mobile providers to start deploying their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) service on the London Underground (tube trains), which have been deployed on the Central Line between Queensway and Holland Park, and on the Northern Line between Kentish Town and Archway.

Mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has published the results of their latest study, which reveals that the fastest UK city for 5G (mobile broadband) internet download speeds is Birmingham (162.7Mbps), while the West Midlands in England tops the table for fastest UK regions on 151.4Mbps.
