ASA Ban Vodafone UK Ads for Misleading Unlimited Data Claims

Complaints made by Virgin Media and Three UK have today resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning several adverts for Vodafone’s new “unlimited data” mobile plans, which primarily occurred because of a failure to clearly express the related mobile broadband speed restrictions (especially on 5G).

Huawei You GO! UK Green Lights Firm for non-Core Telecoms Kit

After a protracted period of uncertainty the UK Government has today confirmed that kit from Chinese technology giant Huawei and other “high risk vendors” will be banned from the “sensitive” core of future UK 5G and “gigabit-capable” fixed broadband ISP networks, although non-core 5G kit (antennas, street cabinets etc.) will be exempt.

ICS Wants Full Fibre Broadband for All of Scotland by 2027 UPDATE

The new Infrastructure Commission for Scotland (ICS) has this morning published a blueprint for their proposed 30-year infrastructure strategy, which among other things calls on the Scottish Government (SG) to ensure the delivery of a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover all of the country 2027.

Microsoft has just made their new Xbox Console Streaming feature more widely available, which means that anyone with an Xbox account (and on the Xbox Insider program) in the UK can now try their new remote play video gaming service (streamed from your console to a remote device). BT Defends Cost Proposals for Sharing Rural UK Mobile Sites

Last year’s £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) agreement between BT (EE), Vodafone, Three UK and O2, which will see the operators working together in order to extend geographic 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by 2025, was just the start of what could be a tricky period of implementation.

Sky Mobile UK Add Ultrafast 5G Plans At No Extra Cost for VIPs

Sky (Sky Broadband) has, after a short delay, finally made ultrafast 5G technology available on their Sky Mobile plans at no extra cost (with VIP), which as part of their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement is based off the new network being deployed by O2 (Telefonica UK) in the 3.4GHz band.

O2 UK Follows Vodafone into Testing an OpenRAN Network

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced its own plans for an Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN), which works to standardise the design and functionality of mobile network (3G, 4G or 5G) hardware and software (i.e. making network deployments more cost effective). Vodafone also plans O-RAN trials (here) in rural areas.

Farmers Survey Highlights Poor UK Rural Mobile and Broadband

Once again the National Farmers Union has published the results from its annual online and telephone based survey of several hundred members, which found that just 17% of farmers had access to “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 16% last year and 4% in 2015) and 15% have no indoor mobile signal at all.

Vodafone Extend Ultrafast 5G to Six More UK Cities and Towns

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their new ultrafast 5G data (mobile broadband) network has now gone live in busy areas around the cities of Belfast, Edinburgh and Leeds, as well as the towns of Cheadle, Rochdale and Stockport around Greater Manchester. Electrosensitivity UK Ad Banned for Claiming 5G is Dangerous

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” advert by campaign group Electrosensitivity-UK after it wrongfully claimed that the roll-out of ultrafast 5G mobile networks could result in a range of health effects, such as “reduced male fertility, depression, disturbed sleep and headaches, as well as cancer.”

Ofcom UK Propose Predictable Annual Work Plan for 2020-21

The generalised summary covers everything from improving fairness for consumers (e.g. end-of-contract notifications), internet regulation and boosting the roll-out of faster broadband ISP and mobile services etc.

O2 Extends Live 5G Mobile Network Coverage to 20 UK Cities

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) ended 2019 last night by announcing that they had switched-on their ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network in a further 13 cities across the United Kingdom, which meant they finished the year with a total of 20 as planned. 50 Rural Monmouthshire Villages Targeted for FTTH Broadband

Residents in the tiny rural Monmouthshire village of Llanddewi Rhydderch in Wales now have a second 1Gbps capable speed option for broadband in the form of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which is intended to complement their existing Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial. But another 50 villages could soon join them.

The Queen has today, for the second time since October, carried out the annual State Opening of Parliament, which repeated roughly the same list of Government policy plans as her prior visit.
