A team of international scientists working out of Lancaster University in England have officially kicked off a new consortium called TWEETHER, which aims to harness the millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum (specifically 92-95GHz) in order to develop a new wireless network that could offer economical broadband connectivity with a capacity up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The UK telecoms regulator has started a new consultation that seeks feedback on whether radio spectrum bands above 6GHz could be used for the future 5th generation (5G) of ultrafast Mobile Broadband connectivity, which many predict will be able to offer peak / shared performance of up to or beyond 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) by around 2020.

The past year has been all about technology and deployment, with the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme dominating via its efforts to push BT’s 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) service out to even more areas, but a lot more than that has happened. ISPreview.co.uk highlights some the key Internet technology, policy and anti-piracy developments of 2014 and predicts what might occur in 2015.

As widely expected Ofcom has today announced a decision to make radio spectrum in the 700MHz band, which is currently used for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) channels, available for use via future Mobile Broadband (4G, 5G) services by the start of 2022. Get ready to re-tune your TV or set-top-box.

The national UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that it plans to conduct an auction of spare radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands during late 2015 or early 2016, which is most likely to be snapped up by mobile operators (e.g. Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE) for use in the delivery of 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband connectivity.

Electronics giant Samsung claims to have successfully delivered record setting Mobile Broadband speeds of a staggering 7.5Gbps (Gigabits per second) using a prototype of their next generation 5G technology, with the uninterrupted speeds falling away to 1.2Gbps when the service was tested while travelling at just over 60Mph (Miles per hour) on a 4.35km long racetrack.

The Government has today launched a new Digital Communications Infrastructure Strategy consultation document, which forms part of their effort to develop a long term strategy for helping to ensure that the United Kingdom has the “best connectivity” by 2025-2030 (phone, broadband, mobile etc.).

28th July, 2014 (6 Comments)

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, will this week announce the UK capital city’s long term infrastructure investment plan to 2050 and predicted that the “world’s first” major deployment of future 5G based Mobile Broadband technology will also be rolled out there by 2020. Obviously.

Telecoms giants Ericsson and Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO have taken their experimental 5G based Mobile Broadband technology a step forward by conducting one of the first live, over-the-air, demonstrations of the new service running at speeds of 5.8Gbps (Gigabits per second) using the 15GHz band of radio spectrum.

The next generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband services, which could deliver speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) or more, appeared to come a step closer today after Europe and South Korea signed a new deal that will see both working jointly towards a global definition of the new standard and to cooperate in research.

28th May, 2014 (2 Comments)

The national UK telecoms regulator has today launched several new consultations on its plan to release existing radio spectrum in the UHF 700MHz (Digital TV) frequency band so that faster Mobile Broadband (e.g. 4G and 5G) services can be launched in the same frequency by 2020 – 2022.

The outspoken boss of business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has predicted that the latest generation of fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband connectivity will steadily remove the need for consumer to be forced into paying for a copper-line Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) on top of their Internet connectivity, but for BT it’s still too much of a “cashcow” to ignore.

The standard for the next generation of 5G mobile communications technology is still being debated, yet that hasn’t stopped telecoms giant Ericsson from teaming up with Japanese mobile firm NTT DOCOMO to test its own 10Gbps+ (Gigabits per second) capable solution in Yokosuka; albeit using the 15GHz radio frequency band.

The communications regulator has today set out its approach and priorities (e.g. future 5G mobile broadband) for managing and sharing (e.g. white space technology) the country’s radio spectrum up to the year 2025. As part of this, Ofcom has also published an Interactive Spectrum Map to show how different frequencies are used in the United Kingdom.

Public WiFi hotspots have become increasingly common over the past few years and now even the government’s £150m Super-Connected Cities Programme (SCCP) is seeking to boost their coverage. But is such investment becoming a waste of money and might we be about to witness the end of public wifi as we know it.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has joined forces with Germany to develop the next generation of ultrafast 5G based Mobile Broadband technology, which will apparently only take “one second” to download an 800MB (MegaByte) film. In reality, it won’t be quite that fast.

19th February, 2014 (3 Comments)

The communications regulator has assessed the impact for both licensed and licence-exempt uses of the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands and found that the risk of interference with other services, such as WiFi (adjacent 2.4GHz band), did exist but wasn’t big enough to be worth worrying about.
