A new cross-party report has warned that there is “no silver bullet for how to improve rural mobile coverage” in the United Kingdom, but it has recommended five ways in which the Government could boost 4G network coverage enough to help achieve or beat the current target for 95% geographic coverage by 2022.

As expected mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve switch-on their first live UK trial of 5G based technology in Montgomery Square (Canary Wharf, London), which will test the new spectrum and related hardware devices for performance, wireless broadband speeds and coverage.

Mobile operators Three UK and O2 have moved to improve the data capacity of their 3G, 4G and future 5G mobile networks in London by signing a new agreement with SSE Enterprise Telecoms. Under this deal the latter will use its high-capacity fibre optic ring in central London to help link up cell sites.

New research carried out in August 2018 by Tutela has claimed that O2’s recent move to splash £524m on a slice of both the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands (here) has already given the operator an 80% mobile broadband speed boost, at least in the cities where 2.3GHz (4G) has been activated.

The Edinburgh-based Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG), which builds masts and other fibre optic connected UK mobile infrastructure, has completed a debt fund raising of £220 million that will be used to help mobile operators upgrade and construct new 5G ready wireless networks.

Ofcom has today published the technical advice that they recently submitted to Government, which proposes a number of ways in which near universal UK Mobile (3G, 4G, 5G) coverage might be achieved (public subsidy, rural wholesale access etc.), beyond what will be established via their forthcoming auction of the 700MHz band.

The UK Government has this week posted a brief update on their £200m national 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) programme, which summarises all of their existing projects to test the future ultrafast wireless broadband technology and also hints at their plans for the next 12 months.

The trade association for mobile network operators in the United Kingdom, Mobile UK, has today published a new report that aims to improve service coverage (2G, 3G, 4G etc.) by highlighting how local councils can help to both build and benefit from new telecoms infrastructure.

The United Kingdom’s first “large-scale” test bed of next generation Gigabit speed capable 5G mobile broadband technology is set to take place in the West Midlands, with the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton being today lined up to conduct the new trial, which is worth up to £75 million.

The UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has today issued a new ‘Call for Expressions of Interest‘ in their proposed £35m trial of 5G based mobile broadband and fibre optic technology on the Trans Pennine rail (trains) route between Manchester and York in England.

Mobile operator Three UK has published their H1 2018 results, which among other things revealed that monthly Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) data usage per customer grew by 10% during the first six months of the year to total 7.6GB (GigaBytes) and that’s compared with a rise of +7% for the whole of 2017.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has released their latest results to the end of June 2018 (financial Q4 17/18), which reveals that “Fibre” (FTTC) penetration has risen to 38% (up from 33% six months ago) of their UK broadband base. Plus they’re planning an early Sky Mobile launch of 5G and have a new broadband router coming.

The UK government has today set out a range of new proposals (copper switch-off, regulatory reforms etc.) as part of their Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR), which seeks to help boost investment and support for future 5G mobile and “full fibre” (FTTH/P) ultrafast broadband. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has put £5.6m toward supporting the launch of their new ‘Delivering Digital Connectivity Strategy’, which aims to “significantly improve mobile, broadband and public WiFi coverage, whilst securing future proof full fibre [FTTP] and 5G networks.”
