Fixed wireless networks are used across the UK for supplying broadband ISP connections to homes, providing backhaul capacity for mobile networks, distributing TV and so forth. As such Ofcom’s review of related services, which sets out their key decisions and a 5 year plan for the spectrum, is very important.

The Country Land and Business Association, which represents thousands of landowners (farmers and businesses) in England and Wales, has once again called on Ofcom to pull rural parts of the UK out of the “digital dark age” by forcing Mobile operators to make 4G “available for all businesses and communities.”

The CEO of Ofcom, Sharon White, yesterday told the Connected Britain event in London that to provide good mobile network (4G etc.) coverage across virtually all of the UK landmass would cost up to around £6 billion and is likely to require some form of cross subsidy.

Mobile operator Vodafone has countered EE’s announcement of a 5G trial in London (here) by confirming that they too will be testing the future 1Gbps capable mobile technology between October and December 2018, albeit in 7 UK cities: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester.

A new online RootMetrics survey of 1000 mobile customers has found that EE and Three UK have the highest levels of satisfaction with Mobile Broadband speeds (57% and 58% respectively), while O2 is bottom. Overall 79% would be willing to pay “marginally” more for something faster and more reliable (like 5G).

The UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA), which is the official trade body for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband providers, has called on Ofcom to “modernise the way it allocates spectrum resources” because they claim that the current approach of national auctions is “no longer fit for purpose“.

The Mayor of London UK, Sadiq Khan, has published a new roadmap that aims to build the “smartest city in the world” and to improve its digital connectivity. The measures will grow public WiFi hotspots, support 5G Mobile networks and make “full fibre” (FTTH/P) ultrafast broadband available to all new build homes.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published a new consultation document on their proposals for the crucial World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19), which amongst other things highlights the bands they’d like to see used for 5G and the possibility of adopting 6GHz for use in future WiFi networks.

Mobile operator EE has today announced that it will switch on the “UK’s first” live trial of their new prototype 5G based ultrafast wireless broadband network at 10 sites around London’s Tech City area during October 2018, including five small businesses and five homes. Gigabit speeds are predicted.

Mobile operator EE has today rejected criticism from rival O2, which claimed that their plan to become the first in the UK to launch a commercial 5G mobile network would only result in a “lite” version of the future ultrafast mobile broadband technology (i.e. missing key features).

More than 50 MPs have signed a letter by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Rural Services that calls on the government’s digital secretary, Matt Hancock, to ensure that 95% of the UK’s landmass can access a mobile service from all operators (Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2) by the end of 2022.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced a new contract with SSE Enterprise Telecoms, which will initially see the latter facilitating fibre optic connections to 20 of the mobile operator’s core data centres. The deal helps to enhance capacity for their existing 4G network and prepare it for 5G.

Do we still need a fixed line telephone (voice) service? A new ISPreview survey of 1,911 readers has found that only 14.5% still use a landline phone service for making most of their calls and 67.2% said they’d get rid of it if the service wasn’t still needed by most ISPs for home broadband.

As expected the UK telecoms regulator has today finalised precisely how much extra mobile spectrum has been won in the recent auction of the 4G friendly 2.3GHz and future 5G targeted 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands, which saw EE (BT), O2, Three UK and Vodafone spend a total of £1.37bn.
