The weight of the Government’s controversial new Internet Snooping legislation (Investigatory Powers Bill) will not fall on the shoulders of the market’s smallest broadband providers, but even if it did they wouldn’t be able to tell you about it because the biggest ISPs want them all gagged.

Ofcom’s easier broadband and phone switching rules are due to go live later this month (20th June). Interestingly BT appears to have informed UK ISPs that they plan to upgrade a large swathe of predominantly smaller telephone exchanges, many of which are in rural areas, from their older and slower 20th Century Network (20CN) based broadband and phone platform to the latest 21CN and Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) service between April and June 2015.

Choosing the right broadband ISP for your needs can sometimes seem a bit like swimming with sharks, you’re never quite sure which one will end up biting you first. The quality of customer support and Internet speeds that vary due to a variety of often opaque factors are also a big cause of frustration. But with a little luck our annual editors pick might help. The outspoken boss of broadband provider AAISP (Andrews and Arnold), Adrian Kennard, has criticised BTOpenreach for making a “very very detrimental change” to the terms of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service. In particular Openreach intends to stop supporting the VDSL modem they provide, which the ISP fears could make it harder and more costly to get faults fixed.

As the controversial Data Retention and Investigation Powers Bill (DRIP) slips its way through the House of Commons and into the House of Lords, the outspoken boss of broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has promised to use “all practical legal means” in order to protect their customers from state sponsored Internet snooping.
